Over the weekend, several villas in Puig de Ros near Llucmajor were broken into. A couple lost jewelry worth about 100,000 euros — the neighborhood is calling for more police presence.
Several break-ins in villa settlement – neighbors demand more police
In the night from Friday to Saturday, in the residential area Puig de Ros near Llucmajor, several houses were broken into. Residents report two masked individuals who apparently methodically tested doors and windows. In one villa, jewelry worth around €100,000 was stolen — the victim: a foreign couple who were sleeping during the intrusion and only noticed the loss hours later.
How the perpetrators operated
According to residents and initial investigations, the burglars used a quiet drill to make a hole next to a window to enter the house. In other cases, witnesses reported that attempts were made to force open aluminum or plastic doors near the lock. Some neighbors even fear that sedative gas was used — at least this suspicion circulated in the settlement.
Witnesses, doubts, anger
It was around three o'clock in the early morning, says a man from Carrer de Voltor, who woke up because his dog barked. He describes two masked individuals who searched the properties with flashlights. "They were fast, very drill-like," says a neighbor who has installed a security camera on the facade. The recordings are now being evaluated, according to the investigators.
Accusations against the municipality
The residents' association Mirador del Delta is outraged. They had already drawn attention to the security situation in 2021 with more than 3,000 signatures, spokespersons recall: Cameras were installed, but little has been seen of the promised patrols. "We no longer feel safe in our own homes," reads a statement. Many residents subsequently upgraded themselves — with cameras, alarm systems and neighborhood groups.
What the police say
The Guardia Civil is investigating and currently reviewing neighborhood footage. Hints point to professional perpetrators who apparently scouted the properties. No concrete arrests have been announced to date.
The mood in the neighborhood
On Monday you could see more lights than usual in Puig de Ros: some houses with additional sensor lights, neighborhoods exchanging numbers, and conversations at doorsteps. The insecurity remains. For many, it's clear: there needs to be a visible police presence and quicker responses, otherwise the villa district will eventually feel like a free-fire zone.
