Challenge Peguera Kicks Off with Traditional Correfoc Fire Run – Sport Weekend in Calvià

The Challenge Peguera has begun: Correfoc, junior contests, and on Saturday the triathlon with swimming, 90 km cycling and a half marathon will fill Calvià – and cause traffic disruptions.

Fire, Sea and Starting Triathletes: This Is How the Weekend Began

\n

On Friday evening at 8:00 PM, Peguera once again brought its fire tradition from the hinterland onto the promenade: at the Correfoc – the Mallorcan fire run – sparks and flames danced close to the sea while spectators stood on the steps of the Paseo Avinguda del Sol, feeling the heat of the flames. Not an elegant event, more loud, smoky and very real. Perfect to herald the sport weekend.

What Lies Ahead in the Coming Days

\n

Today and tomorrow, a tight program: Saturday morning the main starters take off, featuring almost two kilometers of swimming, 90 kilometers of cycling and 21 kilometers of running – the classic middle distance. Already in the morning there is the Junior Challenge, in the afternoon a pure women's race follows, a reason for many families to bring the children to the course.

The main course traditionally starts early: If you want to watch the pro duels, be at the beach around 07:30. On the cycling course, it goes several times through the municipality of Calvià, past Canyellas, through the hills and back to the coast. That means: If you still want to go to the supermarket or to work today, plan to leave a bit earlier or plan bus and bike.

Traffic and Tips for Residents

\n

The municipality has announced several road closures. Especially affected are the access roads to the promenade and parts of the MA-1 exit towards Peguera – at least that's the usual route that will be closed. Expect traffic light outages on the main road and controlled detours by volunteers in yellow vests. My tip: run errands after 15:00 or leave the car at home. And smile at the stewards, they are really doing their best.

Atmosphere, Volunteers and Safety

\n

In Peguera there are around 200 volunteers and emergency services on site; some I know from the local sports club: Marta, who has been at the cycling route for years, told me today that the mood is “as always: friendly, excited and a bit chaotic.” Paramedics and bike mechanics are signposted, and there are collection points for lost items near the ice cream shop on the corner of Carrer Platja.

For Spectators

\n

Good spots to watch are the promenade, the small harbor and the hill at Calle Tramuntana – there you have a direct view of the transition area and the running course. If you want to take photos: pack a light jacket, tomorrow morning it will be around 18–22 °C with a light breeze from the northwest. Cafés near the beach open earlier and offer small specials; some bars have extra bike racks set up.

Brief Reminder for Drivers

\n

Closures can be extended at short notice, especially if a traffic jam occurs at a turnaround loop. Emergency numbers are posted on the boards, and the bus lines toward Palma have special schedules today and Saturday – better check online briefly or read the information at the stops.

All in all: it will be loud, athletic and local. Those taking part will experience the island from its active side. Those watching will see solid competitions and a bit of Mallorca’s hustle and warmth. I’ll be back on the course tomorrow, probably with too much coffee and the camera – see you then!
