Condor is pulling back permanently from Leipzig/Halle Airport. Its sister airline Marabu will take over routes to Mallorca and other vacation destinations — mainly due to aircraft shortages and Condor's restructuring plans.
Condor withdraws from Leipzig/Halle — what this means for Mallorca
At Leipzig/Halle Airport, something has changed, even if on a gray November morning at first only the departure boards look deserted. Condor, long a staple on the summer flights to Mallorca, has decided: The airline will no longer fly from Leipzig/Halle to Mallorca starting with the upcoming winter schedule.
No dramatic announcements at the terminal, no big spectacle — but a gradual withdrawal. The routes that Condor previously served will instead be taken over by its sister airline Marabu. Starting in November, Marabu will connect the eastern German airport to, among others, Heraklion, Funchal, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Tenerife South; in winter 2025/26 seven vacation destinations from Leipzig are planned.
Why the withdrawal?
In short: aircraft are in short supply. Condor is parting ways with older Boeing 757s; replacement aircraft — especially the new Airbus A321 — have not yet been delivered in the desired numbers. Also comes practical everyday business: The airline has to provide feeder flights to Frankfurt itself since there is no longer a contract with a large German airline. All of this together leads to bottlenecks in flight operations.
The company is in a financial turning point. For the fiscal year 2023/24, a deficit of around 62 million euros was reported; Condor is working to become profitable again and repay government aid received. An investor holds more than half of the shares, the rest remains with a state-backed rescue company — that makes decisions not easier.
For travelers on the ground this means: The well-known Condor flights from Leipzig will no longer be visible on booking lists; instead Marabu will appear. For some regulars this is a small shock — you have your favorite flight number, due to routine. Others probably won't notice as long as the ticket to Palma, the boarding time, or the coffee at the gate fits.
What remains open
It is unclear whether Condor will return in the summer flight schedule. Current indications suggest that Marabu will also take over the following summer connections. For vacationers, short-term changes are minimal, but in the long run the flight landscape in Leipzig could face new fluctuations — depending on how quickly replacement aircraft arrive and how the economic situation develops.
For anyone flying from Leipzig soon: keep an eye on your booking confirmation and try the other coffee brand in the terminal. Changes in the skies are gradual, but noticeable — especially when the aircraft are missing.
