A fisherman spotted a severely decomposed body about 40 km off Cala Rajada in Mallorca's northeast. Rescue services recovered the body and brought it to Portocolom — an autopsy will determine its identity.
Major discovery off the east coast: body recovered in advanced decomposition
\nOn Tuesday morning, a fishing boat about 25 nautical miles (almost 40 kilometers) off the northeast coast of Mallorca spotted a lifeless body in the water. The location was in the area off Cala Rajada; the crew alerted authorities around 11:15 a.m.
\n\nShortly afterwards, emergency responders arrived: a rescue ship from the sea rescue service and a diving unit of the Guardia Civil. The unit confirmed on site that it is a severely decomposed corpse. Due to the body's condition, immediate identification is not possible.
\n\nBody brought to Portocolom – autopsy planned
\nThe discovery was taken to Portocolom, where the on-duty forensic doctor and the Criminal Police from Manacor took over the investigations. A forensic examination (autopsy) is now to determine who the deceased was and how long he had been drifting in the water. Early indications suggest it could be the victim of a boat accident or someone from a migrant crossing, but only the investigation will show.
\n\nSuch cases are unfortunately not entirely uncommon here: in recent months there have been several bodies found off the island, sometimes even under tragic circumstances such as bound corpses. Authorities caution against drawing premature conclusions until forensic results are available.
\n\nAdditional discovery: sea turtle rescued
\nDuring the recovery operation, rescuers also spotted a sea turtle entangled in fishing nets. The animal was temporarily secured, experts from Palma Aquarium were informed and will take care of its further care — a small bright spot on a gloomy day.
\n\nFor residents of Portocolom and local mariners, the operation was visible: boats in the harbor, conversations on the quay, people looking at the vessel with the discovery. No one enjoys seeing such things; you can sense that the sea's stories are very close here, often painful.
\n\nInvestigations are ongoing. Once the autopsy results are available, police and the forensic department will publish further information.
