Dispute over Christmas Market in Palma: Traders, Associations, and an Austrian Operator

A new 'German' Christmas market in Sa Feixina is fueling debates: retail associations back the project, market operators warn of displacement.

New Christmas Market in the Heart of Palma Sparks Controversy

As I walk along Sa Feixina, I can already hear children's laughter from the playground and the clinking of coffee cups from the small cafe on the corner in the wind. Right there, between the harbor and Santa Catalina, an organizer plans this year to host a large, German-speaking influenced Christmas market — operating daily from November 21 to January 6.

The market is to run under the name Christmas in Palma, with about 61 stalls. The concept is Nordic-inspired, according to the organizers in a scale that raises many hopes and concerns: traders see revenue potential, traditional market operators fear displacement.

Retail Associations Stand Behind the Project

The local retail associations Pimeco and Afedeco support the initiative. Their message is clear: Palma needs Christmas life in the streets, and anyone who brings customers to the old town also helps local businesses. They speak of regional products at the stalls and of strengthening the city center as a shopping destination — instead of letting people drift to the large malls outside.

Pushback from Traditional Market Operators

On the other hand, many fair exhibitors are upset. They see in the project not fair competition, but interference with existing market structures. Some operators report that the city has reduced spaces for traditional Christmas markets this year — that increases frustration even more. 'That is how you lose what makes the fair what it is,' said one of them in a cafe on the Rambla, where discussions can get loud.

Who Is Behind the Event?

Reportedly, a restaurateur from Austria who has been active on the island for years is in charge. A company named "Parque Magico de Navidad S.L." was registered in May; it lists the organizer as responsible. On the current website, construction is still underway, job postings for hut staff and cleaners are already online — but a full imprint is still missing.

The city administration has scheduled the official start of the Christmas lights for November 22, 6:30 PM at Passeig del Born — that will again attract thousands. Whether the new market enriches the pre-Christmas mood or displaces old structures will be decided in the coming weeks on the squares and in the cafĂ©s.

I myself look forward to mulled wine, but also to clear rules: Whoever wants Palma to stay lively must talk on eye level with all parties involved. Otherwise, anticipation quickly turns into gossip — and we know that well enough here at the harbor.
