A vigilant caregiver alerted authorities: Police found an elderly woman in Manacor living under catastrophic hygienic conditions â the son was arrested.
Son of a senior woman in Manacor in custody â Neighbor and caregiver had raised the alarm
It was one of those gray mornings in Manacor when the National Police arrived. A caregiver who had been regularly looking after the woman for months had recently noticed clear deterioration and alerted the authorities. On-site, officers found an elderly woman in a flat that, according to police, was already defined by odor and grime.
Uninhabitable conditions
The refrigerator was empty, the officers say. Trash everywhere, dirty dishes, strong mold on walls and furniture. In several rooms, authorities discovered pests: cockroaches crawled across floors, and rats had evidently been rummaging through supplies and corners. The dogs living in the home were also in poor condition.
The image presented to the officers was more than just neglect. It spoke of neglect. The health condition of the senior woman also raised concerns: weak, undernourished, and clearly limited in mobility. Social services were immediately engaged.
Allegation: abuse and pension withdrawals
The son, who lives in the same apartment, was arrested on the day of the operation. He is accused of physically abusing his mother and neglecting her over a long period. In addition, police are investigating suspicions that he regularly withdrew the seniorâs pension and profited from it.
A court protection order forbids the accused from approaching the apartment or the woman. Authorities ordered that the affected woman be placed in the care of social services; she was taken that same morning to a supervised facility, according to the official statement.
If you notice something, you must act
The whole case was uncovered by an external caregiver who had observed changes in the womanâs condition and persisted until someone arrived. A clear reminder: relatives, neighbors, or caregivers who notice abnormalities should not look away. For older people, an empty fridge or a strange odor can be a serious warning sign.
In Manacor, investigations continue. Police are now reviewing account movements and interviewing witnesses from the vicinity. For the woman, safety and medical care come first. For the neighborhood, the feeling remains uneasy: such things happen, and often they are only noticed by outsiders.
The city administration reiterates: report any concerns about elderly or dependent people immediately. There are emergency numbers and social services available around the clock.
