Types of Mallorcan Wines

Wine produced in Mallorca is distinct and revered among international oenophiles. From refreshing whites to bold reds, Mallorcan wines are among the best in Spain. Although this region is not as well known as Rioja or Priorat, its wines should not be overlooked. Mallorca produces delicious whites from large plantations of Prensal and Manto Negro at high altitude in the Serra de Tramuntana. These clean, crisp wines show notes of citrus, herbs and a subtle mineral character. When made from Prensal Blanc, wines of this style often contain a touch of sweetness. For those looking for an intensely aromatic white, the Foguera de Mallorca variety is a must. Red wines tend to be Mallorca's specialty. As such, the predominant grape variety is Manto Negro, a black-skinned variety indigenous to the island. It is often blended with other local grapes, as well as clones of French varieties such as Mourvedre and Syrah. These wines are structured, deep and concentrated, with flavors of black fruit, leather and tobacco. Many Mallorcan producers also make excellent rosé wines. Two popular varieties are Callet and Mantonegro, which give excellent quality rosés. These wines tend to have a light to medium body and vibrant acidity, offering delicious aromas and delicate fruit flavors.
