I remember my first walk through the estate’s lanes in Deià: wind mixing salt and rosemary, and gnarled olive canopies watching over the valley like old friends. La Residencia offers the chance to sponsor exactly such a tree. For many of us this is not just a nostalgic gesture but a concrete contribution: the slopes were neglected for years, and now hectare by hectare they are being replanted and maintained. As a sponsor you receive a small personal olive‑wood plaque on the tree, a bottle of extra virgin olive oil from the harvest, and — more importantly — insights into traditional care methods. If you wish, you can help with pruning, check on the tree in person, or come once a year for the harvest. The initiative connects culture, nature and food. So the next time you enjoy bread with fresh oil, know that a piece of this landscape has accompanied you. A lovely gift, a quiet contribution to landscape care and a little bridge to Mallorcan agriculture.
Olive tree sponsorship at La Residencia
The sponsorship is surprisingly straightforward and very personal. La Residencia manages around 1,500 olive trees across roughly 14 hectares of terraced slopes above Deià. Many trees are several hundred years old; some estimates even suggest specimens over a thousand years old. The idea is simple: for an annual contribution of about €350 you cover the care costs for one tree, receive a small olive‑wood plaque with the sponsor’s name and are sent updates about the tree’s condition by post or email. What mattered to me was that you also receive a bottle of extra virgin olive oil from the grove’s harvest – a very honest souvenir.
What I particularly like is that you are not just a donor, you can become part of the whole. Visits are possible on request; occasionally there are workdays for pruning and harvesting where you can talk to the gardeners and get involved. Participation is voluntary, but anyone who has taken part in olive picking on a cool morning knows this special calm: the rustle of leaves, the scent of earth, the first fresh taste of oil right after pressing. The sponsorship helps restore old stone walls, trim overgrown branches and rejuvenate weak trees. For people who value sustainability and local craftsmanship, it is more than a gift – it is a connection to a piece of Mallorcan landscape and culture.

How the adoption works
The process is, frankly, very down‑to‑earth: you express your interest to the hotel, receive information about the tree to be cared for and the chronological documentation of its maintenance. The sponsorship is usually concluded for one year and can be renewed. For the €350 you receive the personal plaque, at least one bottle of oil from the harvest and regular updates. Those who are often on the island can arrange visits — for example in late autumn for the olive harvest or in late winter for pruning. The team then explains how and why pruning is done, which pests to watch for and which varieties dominate the slope. There is also the option to book the sponsorship as a gift: a pretty card, the plaque and the first bottle of oil arrive as a present for the recipient. To me it is a lovely, meaningful souvenir from Mallorca.
Deià, landscape and tips for visitors
Deià itself is a village best explored on foot. After visiting the olives I recommend a coffee on the plaça, a stroll through the narrow lanes and dinner in one of the small restaurants with a sea view. The best time for the olive sponsorship is autumn and winter: in autumn for the harvest, in winter for pruning and for quieter walks without large tourist crowds. Pack sturdy shoes — the terraces are steep and partly rocky. If you stay longer, combine the visit with a trip to the coast at Cala Deià; the way there is short but beautiful. And honestly: nothing tastes better than fresh bread, a pinch of sea salt and the first glass of oil from ‘your’ tree on a quiet morning.
