Northeast Mallorca sits in an odd in-between: relaxed coastal life meets surprisingly refined cuisine. I have lived for years between Alcúdia and Canyamel and have sorted my favorite places by atmosphere, dish recommendations and practical tips. Here you will find not only exclusive starred addresses but also beach bars that make paella so well you forget the sand under your feet.
In the following sections I cover six distinctive places – Alcanada, Alcúdia & Port d'Alcúdia, Artà, Canyamel, Playa de Muro and Sa Pobla – and name specific restaurants, what I order there, when it's best to reserve and how to plan the journey in a relaxed way. A small warning: terraces fill up early in summer; in spring everything is more relaxed and the local products taste especially good. Bonus: notes on parking, dress code (casual, but not the very worst flip-flops at starred venues) and the flavor hit you absolutely must try.
Alcanada – peaceful bay with golf-club charm
Alcanada feels in the morning like a hidden village by the water: a few houses, a small pebble beach and the famous lighthouse at the bay entrance. People come here mainly for the quiet and the view. The restaurant on the small promenade is my favorite for a late breakfast or a light lunch. The terrace looks directly out to sea – best to book a table for about 1:00 pm, when the breeze keeps the mosquitoes away and the light beautifully illuminates the bay.
The menu features simple, well-made dishes: homemade gazpacho with freshly chopped cucumber, grilled squid with lemon-olive oil and a very solid Bacalao à la Mallorquina. Small tip: ask for the daily fish recommendation, it usually comes with a side of fried fennel or new potatoes. Prices are moderate, but people happily pay a little extra for the view.
Arrival: parking is limited, so come early or cycle from Port d’Alcúdia – a wonderful route under pine trees. In winter the place is more relaxed; in summer reserve ahead. Perfect for couples and families seeking sea views without much fuss.
Alcúdia & Port d'Alcúdia – variety between the old town and the harbor
Alcúdia & Port d'Alcúdia morning atmosphere can be similar to Alcanada: small streets, historic corners and a busy harbor area. The mix between the charming old town and the marina means you can go from a traditional Mallorcan lunch in a narrow cobbled street to seafood with a view of the moored boats. The promenade restaurants are ideal for people-watching and fresh fish dishes.
The menu options range from homemade soups and tapas to grilled fish and paella. Tip: ask about daily catches and seasonal vegetables. Parking around the old town is limited; consider arriving early or using public transport in high season. Great for visitors who want both cultural strolls and relaxed harbor dining.
Canyamel – from beach bistro to two Michelin stars
Canyamel is a curious mix of family beach, upmarket hotel restaurants and one of the island's culinary anchors. If you want luxury, plan a dinner at the two-star restaurant – the 11-course menu is intense and surprising, ideal for special occasions. It's worth reserving early (weeks in advance during high season), and follow the sommelier's advice on wine or herb pairings – they know the island wines very well.
For relaxed days by the water, Melbeach restaurant is a safe bet: in the morning a light avocado toast with local olive oil, at lunch ceviche or a grilled sea bream. I like the combination of barefoot atmosphere and attentive service. Also recommend the cliffside restaurant of a boutique hotel – you sit with a view over the bay, the vegetables often come from their own garden and the plates are pared-down but flavorful.
Arrival: Canyamel is easy to reach by car; beach parking is usually available. In summer reservation culture starts early – for a dinner on the terrace I recommend 8:00 pm or later, when the heat has gone. Beach restaurants are perfect for families during the day; for romantic dinners reserve the starred restaurant.
Playa de Muro & Sa Pobla – beach, paella and country cuisine
Playa de Muro is my place for days with sand between the toes and evening drinks by the water. The beach clubs often have several areas: relaxed lunch, lounge seating and evening DJ sets. One club I frequent serves everything from sushi and ceviche to classic paella – ideal when a group has varied tastes. I recommend late lunch around 3:00 pm, when the sun is softer but dishes are still fresh.
Just behind the beach lies Sa Pobla, the agricultural heart of the region. Here you taste potatoes, vegetables and olive oil in an authentic way. A small country restaurant prepares traditional Mallorcan stews and grilled lamb as you'd expect from grandma, but with attentive service and a small, well-chosen wine list. A tip: ask for a menu based on seasonal local products – in spring young potatoes and peas are heavenly.
Practical: Playa de Muro has ample parking, though in high summer it's a bit further from the beach. Sa Pobla is perfect for a quiet dinner after a day at the beach. Dress code: comfortable. A perfect combination for families, groups with varied tastes and lovers of rustic cuisine.
