Can Bordoy — a city oasis with a private feel in Palma
A surprisingly green boutique hotel in the heart of Palma's old town — large suites, an unusually big garden and a restaurant that also draws locals.

I've spent several nights in Palma's old town, but few places manage to feel as secretly luxurious as Can Bordoy. The hotel has that 'hidden courtyard' charm, as if you were in an old city villa that has been luxuriously restored. The rooms aren't standard boxes: high ceilings, heavy curtains, a few Art Deco touches and furniture with character. The standout here is the garden — genuinely large for the old town — with palm and orange trees and a heated 16-metre pool that is almost always calm in the morning.
Service runs without intrusiveness; there is a butler, but often it feels more like being looked after by a well-informed friend. Those who care about sustainability will appreciate the avoidance of plastic and the use of local products. And then there's the in-house restaurant, which can surprise at both breakfast and dinner: healthy approaches, Mallorcan ingredients and a touch of fine-dining pace without feeling stiff.
In short: Can Bordoy feels like a private city apartment with hotel service — perfect if you want to be close to the sights but still seek peace and a green retreat.
Can Bordoy Grand House & Garden — The Suites
The 24 suites at Can Bordoy are the first thing that strikes me when I enter the house: not uniform, but individually furnished rooms that leave space. Some suites have bay windows, others tall street-facing windows, and others open directly onto the garden. The décor mixes velvet, dark wood and patinated metal accents; it feels as if someone has carefully combined vintage pieces with modern comforts.
Practically speaking, many rooms are genuinely large — you have space to unpack suitcases or work undisturbed. Some suites have extra-long bathtubs for soaking after a long beach or city day. The beds are adjustable, which I personally appreciate, and the technology (tablets for the digital concierge, subtle lighting control) is present without dominating everything. Small welcome tables often hold fresh flowers, chocolates and seasonal fruit; it feels personal rather than staged.
Another plus is the butler service: it is available when you need it — restaurant reservations, city tips or quickly refilling the minibar are handled reliably. All suites are quiet; the windows are so well insulated that you hardly notice street noise. For couples seeking romance or business travelers who want privacy and comfort, the mix of style and well-thought-out practical details is very convincing.
A small tip: if you like to swim in the morning, choose a suite with access to the garden or pool — I always appreciate the short walk after coffee.

Botànic — the on-site restaurant
The in-house Botànic is more than just a hotel restaurant: it has quickly gained a reputation with locals who like to sit on the shaded terrace. The cuisine follows a clear line: fresh, preferably local products, often with a conscious, light approach. In the morning the breakfast buffet is extensive — fresh orange juice, homemade granola, warm egg dishes on request and a selection of Mallorcan specialties.
For lunch and dinner the team serves small, well-thought-out dishes alongside some more substantial mains. I recall a perfectly grilled sea bream with lemon confit and a surprisingly flavourful vegetable tart with herbs from the region. The presentation is on point but without exaggerated show.
Service is attentive without being overbearing — discreet in the best sense. The menu changes seasonally, and you can tell that quality and sustainability are valued: many products come from local producers and vegetables play a prominent role. Prices are in the upper-mid range for Palma, but the balance is right.
For a relaxed dinner after a day of sightseeing, Botànic is ideal; for an important business meal I would reserve a table in a quieter indoor area. Small tip: if you manage to get a table on the garden terrace you often have the best evening — especially in spring and autumn, when the temperatures are pleasant.
La Lonja & surroundings — Why the location works
La Lonja, to me, is Palma's nicest mix of historical proximity and lively everyday culture — exactly the kind of neighbourhood where a hotel like Can Bordoy works perfectly. The streets are narrow, paved with cobbles, and between the older townhouses you find galleries, tapas bars and small boutiques. In a few minutes' walk you can reach the Paseo del Borne, the cathedral and the lively Santa Catalina district.
The great thing about this location: you can go out in the evening on foot without the walk home turning into a taxi ride. At the same time there are quiet lanes where you won't be kept awake by noise. I like to head out in the morning for a coffee and watch local bakers bring their breads into the shops.
Shopping is right around the corner — not just international labels but also fine local stores with ceramics, leather goods and selected design. The neighbourhood offers more culinary variety than you might expect at first glance: from traditional tapas to modern cuisine.
For visitors who want to explore Palma on foot, La Lonja is almost ideal. You're in the middle of things, but not overwhelmed, and the hotel thus functions almost like a homely refuge — you open the door, stroll away and return in the evening to a green, quiet oasis.
