The island may not offer snow in December, but it has character. When the lights in Palma come on and cafés put more blankets back on the chairs, the hunt for gifts begins both professionally and privately. I prefer to walk through the old town, turn into small side streets and end up at boutiques that offer just the right unique items: handmade ceramics, local turrón varieties or pretty scarves. Large shopping centers like Porto Pi and FAN Mallorca are practical if you want to get everything done quickly — and the opening hours are truly a blessing during the pre-Christmas period.
For food lovers, specialty shops are worth their weight in gold: good wine, Mallorcan olive oil and a few tins of anchovies can become the best gifts every year. For families I recommend small toy shops and Kidshome in Palma; the atmosphere there is calmer than in the big markets. And honestly: the nicest gift is time — a walk together through one of the weekly markets or a hot chocolate on the Paseo Marítimo. In this guide I share my walking routes, the specific shops, opening hours and a small plan for getting through the Christmas season stress-free.
Palma: strolls, shops and little discoveries
My first tip is Palma's old town, because there is more happening here than in any shopping center: along the Plaça Major and the Rambla tourists and locals mix, but the real finds lie in the side streets. Start your walk at the Passeig des Born, stroll towards La Lonja and let yourself wander. Between fashion boutiques you'll find small shops with handcrafted jewelry, independent bookshops and home-accessory stores with pretty candles or throws. A personal favorite is a shop that sells unusual perfumes and English lifestyle magazines — perfect for a gift with character. If you're running late, try the smaller shops on Calle Sant Miquel: there the sellers are often friendly, give good wrapping tips and sometimes offer a quick cup of coffee on the house.
Practical notes: it gets crowded on Saturdays — arrive early. Many shops have extended opening hours in the pre-Christmas period, but still plan time for queues. For parking I recommend the car parks on Avingudes: a short walk and less stress. If you're looking for special items (e.g. handmade ceramics or local turrón varieties), ask in-store — shop owners are often proud of their suppliers and happy to share addresses. And if you find something lovely: have the gift wrapped on the spot; it saves time and looks great under the tree.
