Essen unterm Olivenbaum: Finca Treurer entdecken
I like places that don’t pretend to be something they’re not. Finca Treurer is one of those: an old farm between olive and vine rows where you sit on the terrace in the evening, eat slowly and the crickets provide the rhythm. The family produces a remarkable extra virgin olive oil that you can taste on site and take home. There are simple but thoughtfully prepared menus; many ingredients come from the estate’s own vegetable garden. Weekly schedule? They open every evening from 18:30; on certain days there are tastings, walks through the groves or a barbecue night. Bring light jackets — evenings inland can be cooler than on the coast. For me Treurer is neither fine dining nor a mere tourist attraction. It’s a place where you taste local craftsmanship: olive oil on toasted bread, a plain vegetable dish with intense flavour, a glass of wine from nearby. Book ahead — terrace seats are limited. And if you’re lucky, a family member will tell you how the olive trees have been cared for over generations.

Es Treurer – Finca, restaurant & olive oil

The finca is about 6 km from Algaida on the old country road towards Llucmajor. The main house dates back through several centuries of rural history; the terrace looks toward Randa and the Pla de Mallorca. It is family-run and the olive trees stretch to the horizon. Opening hours: evenings from 18:30, last reservations usually around 21:00. Best to reserve by phone or online form. Languages: Spanish, Catalan, English. Parking is available on site; public transport is scarce, so a rental car makes things easier. Tip: try the homemade bread with fresh olive oil as a welcome to the table.

Olive oil tasting and tips

The tasting is not a stiff, formal event but very approachable: different varieties, fresh or slightly aged, served with bread and small accompaniments. Learn to smell: first the green notes, then fruity aromas, and finally the light peppery finish. One tip: take small sips of water to neutralize your palate, and try the oil warm on freshly toasted bread. Best time to visit: after the harvest in late autumn, when the mill is running and the flavours are most present. You don’t just take oil home — often you also take a small story about the harvest and production.

Practical information & getting there

Travel by car from Palma takes about 25–35 minutes, depending on traffic. GPS: Ctra. Llucmajor – Algaida Km 5.7. Parking is available; bus connections are sparse, taxis or a rental car are more reliable. Dress in layers: evenings can be windy. The golden hours before sunset are ideal for photos. If you want the full experience, combine an evening here with a walk in Algaida or a short detour to the Randa monastery the next morning. All activities should be booked in advance, especially in summer.
