The Ferrocarril de Soller (or "Soller Train") is a unique and historic railway in Mallorca, Spain. It was first built in 1912, and it was the first train line to link Palma de Mallorca with the port of Soller. It is a single-track railway with a total length of 25.5 km, and it winds its way through some of the most beautiful and iconic scenery in the whole of the Balearic Islands.

History

The Ferrocarril de Sóller is a captivating journey that was once a vital link between the city of Palma and the town of Sóller on the Spanish island of Mallorca. For more than a century, the railroad was the only means of transport between the two towns, and today it remains a popular tourist attraction. The service began in 1912 with steam locomotives, and later, in 1929, was modernized with electric locomotives, providing a much faster and more comfortable ride for passengers. As the train winds its way through the mountains and valleys, breathtaking views of the island's stunning scenery can be seen through the windows.

Towns it travels through

The first part of the journey begins in Palma, the capital of Mallorca, and follows the winding road known as the Tramuntana up the mountainside to the town of Sóller. Between Palma and Sóller lives a variety of wildlife, including roe deer, wild boar and hedgehogs. Reddish-brown lizards peek out from the rocks and scurry along the tracks, while hawks circle in search of their next meal. Mountain goats roam freely, feeding on the rich herbaceous vegetation of the area and often sharing their breakfast with train passengers. The journey from Palma to Sóller takes only 25 minutes - twice as long if you return the same day - and offers a beautiful opportunity to admire the stunning natural surroundings.
