Es Freu d'Orient sits quietly in the small mountain village of Orient, just far enough from everyday life that you forget the time on the way. Petra greets you at the door, Patrick works in the kitchen — the couple run the restaurant with a mix of warmth and pragmatism. The atmosphere is simple: stone walls, heavy wooden beams, an open fire in the colder months and a sunny terrace for the warm days. The menu includes Mallorcan dishes as well as German-Austrian classics: from grilled prawns in rosemary-garlic oil to tender braised ox cheeks. Portions are generous, the pace relaxed. Families come for the burger, couples for the slowly roasted lamb. Good bottles from local wineries complement the dishes, often with a small recommendation from Petra. Practical: Es Freu is open year-round, has a small pool area (day use for a fee) and offers a separate room for private events. The nicest route is via Alaró — fewer hairpins, a more relaxed drive. Reservations are recommended, especially on summer Saturdays.
Restaurant Es Freu d'Orient
When you arrive in Orient, you first discover Es Freu by the smell: garlic, herbs and a slightly roasted stock from the kitchen. The restaurant is part of Hotel Dalt Muntanya, housed in a restored stone building and seems as if it has always been there. Petra looks after the guests in front, Patrick works his magic behind the stove. The menu changes with the seasons; nevertheless there are a few stars that never go missing: fresh figs on thinly sliced carpaccio, creamy goat cheese and crispy jamon providing a sweet-salty start. The grilled prawns in rosemary-garlic oil are juicy—you want to dip bread in it. For quieter plates: tuna tataki with sesame crust and seaweed salad — a hint of Asia in the mountains. In main courses, light textures meet long cooking times: grilled octopus with peppery chutney and mashed potatoes, a juicy veal schnitzel with homemade fries or the lamb for two, sous-vide cooked and then caramelized, which you pull apart slowly. Especially recommended are the slow braised dishes, such as ox cheeks that fall apart after 48–49 hours and still have flavor. If you search for something more down-to-earth, you'll find roulade with spaetzle or goose leg with dumplings — a small piece of Central Europe in the Tramuntana valley. Desserts are classic: a crisp crème brûlée, tiramisu with strong espresso. Service? Personal, without intrusiveness. Tip: Pool days cost about €70 per person and are credited to the menu. Private dining for up to 16 people possible; with full rental about 60 guests fit inside. Opening hours vary seasonally; reserve on weekends.
