In Palma there are days when the city feels like an open history book. The Festa de l'Estandard is one such day: loud drums, colorful costumes and the traditional ceremony on the Plaça Cort. The celebration recalls the arrival of Jaume I and the end of Muslim rule on the island — a memory that has been kept alive here since the Middle Ages. The sequence is surprisingly clear: in the morning the royal banner is raised, then people move to the cathedral for mass. Around noon the 'Colcada' is read aloud, a text that many locals still recite from memory. If you are there, you notice how much the event has become part of Palma's everyday feeling: not slickly touristy, but a bit rough, with honest emotions. First-time visitors should pack warm clothing and good shoes — the squares are stone and the December sun can be deceptive. After the ceremony a coffee in the lanes behind the Plaça Cort is recommended; there neighbors like to discuss details of the reading.
Festa de l'Estandard – The celebration itself
The Festa de l'Estandard is not a big pop festival but a living, slightly quirky tradition that has been observed in Palma for centuries. In the morning the flags are raised on the Plaça Cort — the visible start. People in traditional costumes mix with grandparents, families with children and a few curious tourists. The ceremony is short and concise: a brief ritual around the banner, then a march to the cathedral. Particularly striking is the mixture of state and church ritual; you sense that several stories are being told at once — power, religion and local memory. If you look closely you'll notice the details: vestments, the subdued weight of old instruments, and the practiced way participants take their positions. There are no big stages, no speaker systems — the voices and drums fill the square themselves. For locals the day is often more a family gathering than a historical reenactment: neighbours who have known each other for decades chat, children run freely between the adults' legs. As a visitor you should arrive on time; the best views are at the sides of the square near the old town hall windows. And if you're looking for a personal souvenir: locals often sell small handwritten programmes explaining the reading of the 'Colcada'.
