If you’re traveling through the center of the island and fancy something that smells like more than just grapes, Bodega Macià Batle is a safe bet. The family winery is located in Santa Maria del Camí and combines almost a century and a half of winemaking with an unusual sense of design: since the late 1990s rotating artist labels have marked the bottles, which people here don’t just drink but collect. The managing director is a locally well-known character, part cultural promoter, part winemaker, and he personally pushed the idea of putting art directly on the bottles. On the site there is a small gallery, outdoor sculptures and a public route that explains winemaking and holds enough stories about individual vintages to make the tasting a little more meaningful. For visitors: tours are friendly, often offered in English, and opening times vary in summer; a morning reservation is advisable, especially if you’re driving from Palma. Drink a Reserva from a magnum if you can — it will give you not only flavour but also a small poster as a keepsake.
Bodega Macià Batle (address & practical info)
Bodega Macià Batle is located at Camí de Coanegra s/n in Santa Maria del Camí — easily reachable, about 20 minutes from Palma when traffic allows. The estate feels familiar on arrival: a mix of traditional stone walls, modern glass fronts and some unexpected outdoor sculptures. Behind the facade is a family business now in its fifth generation, from a time when wine was still sold in demijohns. Today tours are offered (usually in English, German and Spanish) and there is a small shop where you can buy bottles, large formats and gift packs. Note: the original artworks that adorn the labels are part of the gallery and are not for sale; that makes the visit special because you see the art in situ. Phone and website are useful to book the tour in advance; on Saturdays times are shorter in winter, so prefer morning slots. The atmosphere is relaxed — a walk through the vines, explanations of the varieties and a cosy tasting room where you learn more than just how a wine tastes.

Wines, awards and tasting recommendations
Quality is paramount here. The winery produces several ranges — fruity whites, robust reds, a Reserva and a few special bottlings — and has won many prizes since switching to modern production. A highlight in conversations with regulars is always the Reserva; it is well aged in barrels and as a magnum is popular for special occasions. In 2011 the winery received a national award, and since then numerous international medals have adorned the shelves. Tasting tips: in warm summer weather the local white is dry and lively; for autumn meals I recommend one of the reds with some bouquet and structure. If you want something aimed at export markets, ask for editions often bottled for markets such as the UK, Germany or Switzerland — some label designs are particularly sought after there. A small tip: don’t just stare at the label — smell, take a breath, and chat a little with the person leading the tour; the stories behind the barrels make the bottle richer.
Practical visiting tips and opening hours
Plan your visit so you’re there in the morning or early afternoon. Opening times change seasonally: in summer the doors are usually open longer, in winter they close earlier and have reduced hours on Saturdays. Tours usually run in small groups and last about 45 to 60 minutes including a tasting. Wear shoes suitable for cobbles and country paths, and expect some sun if you sit outdoors — a hat is worth its weight in spring. Parking is available, but it can get tight on weekends. For families: children are welcome, but the tour is geared more towards adults; a short walk through the vines usually entertains kids. Cyclists will find lovely routes through olive and almond trees in the area. Book in advance online or by phone, especially if you want a special tasting or a visit with translation.
