Mallorca in December has so much more to offer than sea and sun: the island fills up with wooden stalls, the scent of mulled wine and handmade gifts. In Palma the Christmas atmosphere pulses from the center to the Estación Intermodal; on weekends families come for ice skating or craft workshops. If you like handicrafts, note the pop-up markets on fincas: there you can find local designers, jewelry and often live music. Smaller towns like Inca, Alaró or Sa Pobla have their own often one-day markets – perfect if you want to escape the crowds and discover authentic Mallorcan products.
Practical tip: most markets run on weekends in the pre-season; on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve opening hours may be shorter. Parking at Pueblo Español and in harbour towns is scarce at peak times, so better use park-and-ride or go on foot. And yes: bring a reusable cup – the mulled-wine cups are nice, and this way you have more money left for candied almonds and leather goods. I visited three families this year and noted which stalls were particularly original – my recommendations by location are listed below.
Palma city centre: Plaza Mayor, La Rambla and Estación Intermodal
In the heart of Palma the city centre changes in December. Plaza Mayor fills with stalls selling typical Christmas tree decorations, wooden nativity figures and handmade gifts. I like to stroll along La Rambla in the late morning, when bakeries still display fresh ensaimadas and children take part in small music shows.
A regular stop is the Estación Intermodal: the large tree there is a real eye-catcher, and in the evenings it feels as if the whole city is on a short festive walk. Tip: anyone looking for original ideas should check the time windows of the finca pop-ups – especially the small "Made on Mallorca" festival on a restored finca, which offers local fashion, jewelry and food stalls and often runs on weekends.
For families: there are often craft workshops and figure-making workshops where children can make their own nativity figures or Christmas cards. Half days are ideal: mornings are quieter, in the afternoon the atmosphere rises with street music and hot chocolate. Photographers should come half an hour before sunset; the light in the alleys is then soft and the lights begin to glow.
Practical: parking garages on the edge of the old town fill up quickly, but Palma is easy to explore on foot – combine a market visit with a coffee in a small café on Carrer de Sant Miquel and you have the perfect winter city stroll.

Ports: Puerto Portals and Port Adriano
The harbours in Mallorca feel especially cosy in winter. Puerto Portals brings an elegant touch with string lights along the promenade, small designer shops and a diverse gastronomy offer. The market there often has international stalls – from German gingerbread to Mediterranean tapas – and an ice-skating option that delights the little ones.
Port Adriano, on the other hand, focuses on family programmes: larger skating areas, giant slides and free shows on some days. Both harbours are recommended for an afternoon: first a market stroll, then fish or a hot soup in a harbour bar. Parking is tricky here on holidays, so plan time to find a spot or come by bus or carpool.
Villages and short local markets
The charming markets in small towns are my personal favourite when I want to escape the city bustle. Sa Pobla, Alaró, Inca, Selva and other villages often have one- or two-day markets with handcrafted products, leather goods and regional treats.
Plan: arrive early so you see the best stalls first – the best olives, cheeses and candied almonds are freshest in the morning. In many villages traditional music and local choirs mix with the market stalls; that creates an honest, relaxed atmosphere. If you're travelling by car, check the local parking notes: occasionally there are one-way rules or temporary parking bans for market setups. And take time for lunch in a village bar: there is often homemade food at very fair prices.
