When I travel in Mallorca with my family, I like to plan a mix of action and relaxed breaks. The island has that wonderful ability to offer both adventure and rest at the same time: children want to slide, dive and see animals, while parents prefer shady cafés and short distances. In this guide you’ll find practical suggestions for everything that fills the day—water parks for morning fun, an aquarium that even fascinates teenagers, cool caves to catch your breath, and boat trips to small islands where the sea is clear and the swims are long.
A few rules that have proven themselves: set off early, keep sunscreen in your bag, and don’t plan too many activities per day. I name specific places, practical times, small tricks (like booking tickets in advance or the best time to snorkel) and what you should definitely pack. That way the holiday stays relaxed and the kids remain happy.
Water parks: Slides, breaks and practical tips
Water parks are a guaranteed hit for children of all ages. On Mallorca I find three classics: Western Water Park in Magaluf for wild slides, Hidropark in Alcúdia for families with little ones, and Aqualand near El Arenal as a good mix. My tip: arrive at opening time, then the queues are shorter and the children can try two slides in a row before the heat sets in. Pack swimwear, sunscreen, a spare T‑shirt and waterproof flip‑flops. Many parks have lockers, but coins for them are handy. For a relaxed lunch break look for a shady spot with a picnic or the small park restaurant — prices are touristy, so it’s better to bring provisions. On days with changeable weather indoor alternatives (aquarium, museums) are quickly reachable if a thunderstorm rolls in.
Palma Aquarium: More than just fish

Caves: Drach, Hams and the smaller treasures
The caves are an unusual counterpoint to a beach day: consistently cooler and exciting for children who love discovering hidden places. The Coves del Drach in Porto Cristo are a classic show with the underground Lake Martel and live music on boats — it feels dramatic and peaceful at the same time. Coves dels Hams are a bit smaller with a more playful staging; Campanet and Genova are quieter, more natural, and ideal if you want to combine small explorers with a nature walk. Sturdy shoes and a thin jacket are sensible because it can get chilly quickly. Tours usually last 30–45 minutes; afternoon tours are often fuller — so choose the morning. For children the light effects are fascinating, but explain the route beforehand so there are no surprises on the steps.
Boat trips: Cabrera and Sa Dragonera for days at sea
A day on a boat is worth its weight in gold for families: snorkeling, sandcastles on a quiet bay and the gentle sway of the boat. The trip to Cabrera usually departs from Colònia de Sant Jordi; there small operators offer day tours with stops for swimming and a short landing in the protected natural area. From Santa Ponsa there are regular trips to the Dragonera island with short hikes, ideal for children who like exploring. Take life jackets for small children, waterproof bags for valuables and a lunchbox — some boats provide food, but freshly brought meals are often better. Booking early secures places, especially in high season.
