October on Mallorca feels a bit like a second spring every year, only cooler: the oppressive summer heat is gone, the air smells of earth and roasted meat, and villages open their market squares for small folk festivals. In this guide I take you to the best local celebrations inland — the sausage and pepper markets, the winemakers’ wine festivals and the traditional sweets markets of Esporles. I’m talking about places where neighbours meet, music that isn’t too loud, and stalls where you still get a real sample. October is ideal for families: fewer tourists, mild weather, children can run free. Pack a light sweater for the evening, book wine tastings in advance and allow enough time to stroll from place to place. You will be surprised how warm people are — they like to talk about their products, from sobrassada to Mallorcan paprika. If you come open-minded and hungry, October is the best time to really taste the island. I recommend keeping Sundays and late afternoons in mind: that’s when the atmosphere is most relaxed.
Esporles: Sweets, pastries and the old market bustle
Esporles in October is unmistakable for me: around ten in the morning a scent of cinnamon sugar and fresh puff pastry drifts through the streets, and the local bakery next to the church always has a long queue. The sweets market there isn’t a glossy event but a warm gathering of families offering cakes, homemade ensaimadas, almond pastries and candied fruits. I remember an older woman explaining how to bake “gató” properly — with a drop of lemon oil and a lot of patience. There are also stalls with liqueurs, rose-petal confections and small gift bags; perfect to take something home. Be sure to try the almond pastries and an espresso at one of the small wooden tables while children collect chestnuts between the stalls. Escorca and the mountain festivals: chestnuts & rustic cuisine
In Escorca you really feel the change of the seasons. The festivals are smaller but very traditional: chestnuts are roasted over open fires, there are hearty stews and often handmade music. The roads there are twistier, so bring good shoes. On one of my autumn visits I saw families walking with lanterns and older men in the village bar talking about the year’s harvest. For nature lovers combining a short mountain walk with a festival is absolutely worthwhile.
Practical tips for festival visits in October
Plan flexibly: many festivals take place at weekends, some only on a specific Sunday of the month. Bring cash — small stalls don’t always accept cards. A light sweater for the evening and comfortable shoes are essential; in mountain villages it can be significantly cooler. If you want to attend wine tastings, book in advance, especially with smaller winemakers. Park on the outskirts and walk into the villages to avoid stress. And: be open to conversations. The warmth of the vendors is often the best part of the visit.
