Weihnachten im Castillo Son Vida – Festtage über der Bucht von Palma
When Palma’s city lights come on early and the December air has a cool, clear quality, there are few better places for Christmas spirit than the Castillo Hotel Son Vida. The old estate sits above the bay — you can see boats, lighthouses and sometimes a late sunset behind the Tramuntana silhouettes. At this time of year the hotel becomes a place that combines classic elements (a salón with a fireplace, a hint of cognac atmosphere) with events that feel like shared joy rather than stiff formality. I visited during Advent — the gospel evening stayed with me because the voices sounded so honest, and the afternoon tea is not a museum piece but cosy: scones, citrus jam and a waitress who recommends the tea. There are craft sessions for children and, for couples, a quiet dinner with refined service. Those who prefer the outdoors can wrap up and enjoy the open-air film with mulled wine. Practical tip: book early for Christmas dinners and the New Year’s gala — window tables with views over Palma are quickly taken.

Christmas and New Year's at Castillo Hotel Son Vida

The Castillo Hotel Son Vida feels like an old house that has learned to pamper guests in a modern way. During Advent the grounds are subtly lit: lanterns along the paths, warm lights on the tower and fir branches in the reception area. The programme is varied without feeling staged. A gospel evening brings families and couples together; the singers stand close to the audience and applause feels genuine, and after the concert there is time for conversation over a glass of dessert wine. There are creative workshops where children (and earnest adults) make cards or paint small nativity figures. Important for parents: the craft sessions are usually in the morning, leaving the afternoon free for walks through the olive groves. In the evenings an open-air film is sometimes shown in the courtyard — blankets are provided and there is a stall with hot chocolate and Spanish turrones. Afternoon tea in the Salón Real is a reliable choice for a calm festive moment: scones, lukewarm almond cakes and a selection of black and herbal teas. The Christmas menu is refined, not excessive, featuring local produce (sea fish, Mallorcan vegetables, a juicy beef main course). For New Year the hotel holds a gala with a multi-course menu and a selection of champagne and Mallorcan wines — ideally combined with a window table from which you can count the lights of Palma. Small practical tip: if you stay for the Christmas brunch, ask for the farmhouse bread from Sóller and the local cheese — those are often the little things you remember. Reservations are made through reception, and the concierge usually helps calmly with special requests.
