Mallorcas Weihnachtsguide – Tipps von hier
Christmas in Mallorca feels different than in more northern countries: less fuss, more room to breathe. As a local or long-term resident you quickly learn to appreciate the winter calm — the lights in Palma, a walk on the beach in a T-shirt, and then back into a warm café. This time of year is ideal for family meals in small restaurants, for visiting village markets, or for a few days in one of the pretty city hotels that put special effort into decorations and menus. The season here begins on December 8 and runs until Epiphany on January 6. Many families split presents between the 25th and the 6th because the mood of each day is different. In this guide I share tried-and-true places to eat, stay, shop and the local traditions that bring me joy every year — including practical notes on opening times and how to find the best stalls at the markets.

Festive restaurants and Christmas menus

Many restaurants close for the winter — but those that stay open put in extra effort. I love trying a small menu at the end of December featuring Mallorcan lamb, notes of sobrasada and seasonal vegetables. Always reserve in advance, especially for December 24, 25 and 31. Tip: ask for the local pastry (ensaimada with chocolate or almond filling) with your coffee. Atmospheres range from cosy village pubs to elegant city hotels; for families I recommend places with large tables and child-friendly menus.

Christmas markets, gifts and local shopping

Palma, Puerto Portals and small villages host atmospheric markets — wooden stalls, ceramics, handmade decorations and hot mulled wine (or at least hot wine). For original gift ideas, local concept stores and makers are worth a visit: candles, special-edition olive oil or handcrafted jewelry. My tip: go in the morning when it’s less crowded and vendors often have fresh goods. Bring a reusable bag — it’s much appreciated here.

Mallorcan Christmas customs and celebrations

The official season starts on December 8 and ends after Epiphany on January 6. Particularly impressive is the midnight mass in La Seu — not only a religious event but also a social occasion. Children often receive gifts on January 6; many families split presents between the 25th and the 6th so both days can be celebrated. A fun New Year’s tradition is eating grapes — one grape for each bell strike — try it, it’s more fun than you might think. And don’t forget: on clear winter days walks in the Tramuntana mountains are a true balm for the soul.
