Palma is the place on Mallorca where many celebrate the turn of the year — from the chimes and grapes to fireworks by the sea. Here are my top tips.

New Year's Eve in Palma always feels a bit like a big, friendly reunion. The city fills with people strolling through the old town, bags of grapes in hand, and there's that special hum in the air as the hours to midnight draw near. The classic meeting point is the area around the cathedral and Parc de la Mar: from there you can see the fireworks over the water and hear the church bells announce the twelve chimes. Those who prefer to stay indoors book a menu at a tapas bar or fish restaurant — many places have special offers, often featuring local classics like lamb, fried fish or Mallorcan rice. I recommend planning early: taxis are scarce, the streets get crowded and it can be surprisingly cold outside. Pack a warm jacket, bring a small bottle of water and pick a fixed meeting point for your group. And yes: the grapes are more fun than ritual, but try them — they're just part of it.
Passeig del Born and the Chimes: The Hour Before Midnight
For me, Passeig del Born always has the best pulse of the city on New Year's Eve. At 23:00 the square is still quiet enough for a last drink in a warmly lit bar; around 23:30 it fills with people, bags full of grapes and small bottles of cava. The bells begin to ring, and if you're close enough to the town hall square or the cathedral you really feel the tension rise. My tip: find a bar with a view of the street, reserve early and dress warmly — the wind on a clear night can be biting. If you're in a group, agree on a clear backup time and meeting point: the mobile network is often overloaded.

Restaurants and Menus: Where I Like to Reserve
Many restaurants offer special New Year's menus: from Mallorcan festive platters with lamb al horno to modern seafood courses. I like to book in small fish places in Santa Catalina or in a cozy tapas bar in La Lonja — there you often find a more personal atmosphere and not a big tourist rush. Reserve weeks in advance, choose a menu with fixed times and ask for a late table: after midnight life is nicest outside. If you can't find a pre-booking, try small bars in side streets — they often have suitable platters and a good atmosphere.
Practical Tips: Arrival, Clothing and Safety
A few practical things that always make New Year's Eve easier for me: book your taxi or parking early, because public transport often runs reduced schedules. Dress in layers — warm jacket, scarf, maybe a foldable blanket. Bring cash; some stalls and small bars accept cards less readily. If you're coming with children, agree on a visible meeting point and bring reflective hats or glow bands. Fireworks are used a lot: keep distance and watch out for small children and pets. And one more tip: the 12 grapes are really fun, so buy a small pack — at the town hall it gets especially lively.
