This year the big switch-on moment of Palma's Christmas lighting falls on Saturday, 22 November 2025. From around 6:30 p.m. a small pre-program with music and little shows begins and the atmosphere slowly builds; the actual countdown and the big illumination are planned for around 8:30 p.m. The event is spread across several central squares – Plaça de la Reina, Plaça de Cort and Plaça del Mercat – and extends along the old town to the Born and Jaume III. What I like: the organisers are using energy-saving LED installations and natural decorations, so it feels festive without showing off. For families there is street theatre and acrobats, for photographers the typical light tunnels and larger Christmas trees as backdrops. The lights usually stay up until early January, perfect if you want to come back later for a quiet evening stroll. Pack a warm jacket and plan your return trip: the city centre will be crowded and there will be road closures on the main streets.
Official switch-on ceremony – 22 November 2025
The highlight is the official ceremony on 22 November: a small supporting programme from 6:30 p.m., with the countdown around 8:30 p.m. I like to stand on Plaça de la Reina or on a side street near the cathedral – both offer a nice mix of people, music and architecture. There are short parades, acrobatics and local choirs singing Christmas songs. For families the early evening shows are ideal; afterwards it gets fuller and noisier. In recent years the city has tried to make everything a bit more sustainable: LEDs, recyclable decorations and less plastic. If you come with children, bring waterproof shoes and a thermos with hot chocolate – the queues for snacks are long, but the atmosphere is worth it.

Getting there, traffic and what else to bring
Public transport is your friend on a night like this: bus lines to the centre are intensified, and parking spaces are scarce. Expect road closures around the old town; taxi drop-offs take longer than usual. If possible, cycle to one of the park-and-ride points and get off at the edge of the centre. Small packing list: warm layers, scarf, comfortable shoes, reusable water bottle, powerbank for your phone and a small torch for the way back. If you want to take photos, bring a small tripod or use your phone's night mode. Pushchairs barely get through the dense crowds, so use a carrier if possible.
Evening programme after the switch-on: walks, bars and local snacks
After the main lights go on, a leisurely walk towards the Born is worth it: the side streets are often less crowded, and numerous bars serve hot chocolate, mulled wine or Mallorcan ensaimadas with cinnamon. If you fancy something savoury, find a tapas bar near Mercat de l’Olivar – from about 9:30 p.m. tables fill up. For a calmer atmosphere go to Marina Portixol; the lights reflect on the water and it's noticeably more relaxed. Pro tip: plan a late dinner or reserve a table in a small restaurant, as many places fill quickly after the event. And if you still have energy: a short detour to the Paseo del Borne shows small installations and restaurants with outdoor heaters.
