I was in a large supermarket in Palma last week looking for genuine Mallorcan products. Surprisingly: few local wines, hardly any salt from the salina, and the olive oil next to international brands felt out of place. That made me thoughtful. As someone who lives here and likes trying new finca restaurants, I believe that we can all make a big difference with small decisions.
Buying decisions affect jobs and small businesses — the winemakers, olive farmers, salt harvesters and the cooks who stay open in winter because regular guests come. This text is not a sermon. It's rather an invitation: look at the labels, ask the market stall about vintage, support local shops even if the price is a few cents higher.
I also give three personal restaurant tips, tell of a conversation with a local tourism organization and give you ideas for gifts and wellness on the island. Small, honest advice: Saturdays at the Mercado in Palma are the best place to discover real Mallorcan products.
Why buying local matters
Last Saturday I stood in front of the wine shelf and was annoyed: many bottles, hardly any indication of origin. In Mallorca there are D.O. wines, small bodegas and biodynamic producers often found only in farm shops or on markets. My tip: look for origin indications (D.O. Pla i Llevant, Binissalem) and ask about vintage and grape variety.
If you see a local option in the supermarket, take it — even if it costs a few euros more. That helps small producers who often employ family members and plan seasonal harvests. And if you want something special, drive to a salina, buy a jar of coarse sea salt directly from the producer or visit a weekly market. There you often learn how a product is made and can talk to the people. That is worth more than a discount.

Tourism, tradition and small producers
A few weeks ago I spoke with people from a local tourism organization that has been striving for decades to present Mallorca as a destination with character. Their concern is to promote sustainable offers while protecting traditional crafts. That means festivals, wine tastings and salt tours are being promoted again.
What that means for you concretely: take part in an organized wine tasting, book a salina tour or visit a craft market. That way your money goes directly to the producers. And as a small reminder: ask at the hotel whether they have local products on the menu — often it's not a big company but the cook's purchasing choices that decide.
Gifts, wellness and small discoveries
Christmas gifts, souvenirs or a relaxed afternoon — Mallorca has more than postcards. I like to give handmade sea salt in small jars, bottles of young olive oil or a bottle of a local Malvasia. For wellness: look for private massage studios in places like Sóller or Pollença. I know a Chinese therapist who works in a small room with a sea view and relieves tension remarkably quickly with acupressure.
One more tip: small manufacturers sometimes open their doors in winter for shop visits. Ask in advance — you'll get stories about production and often a coffee. That makes shopping personal and sustainable.
