As a local or long-term resident you quickly learn to appreciate the winter calm — the lights in Palma, a walk on the beach in a T-shirt, and then back into a warm café. This time of year is ideal for family meals in small restaurants, for visiting village markets, or for a few days in one of the pretty city hotels that put special effort into decorations and menus. The season here begins on December 8 and runs until Epiphany on January 6. Many families split presents between the 25th and the 6th because the mood of each day is different. Palma, Puerto Portals and small villages host atmospheric markets — wooden stalls, ceramics, handmade decorations and hot mulled wine (or at least hot wine). For original gift ideas, local concept stores and makers are worth a visit: candles, special-edition olive oil or handcrafted jewelry. My tip: go in the morning when it’s less crowded and vendors often have fresh goods. Bring a reusable bag — it’s much appreciated here.

And don’t forget: on clear winter days walks in the Tramuntana mountains are a true balm for the soul.
