After months of investigations, a 19-year-old was arrested in Mallorca on suspicion of having run over police officers with a car during a road check in Capdepera. Investigations continue.
Arrest of a main suspect following incident in Capdepera
In Capdepera, the Guardia Civil arrested a young man over the weekend who allegedly tried to run over several police officers with a car during a May traffic stop. The suspect is a 19-year-old, who, according to investigators, had already been involved in thefts before.
The incident, according to investigators
The scene unfolded in the early hours, around 6 a.m. at the roundabout on the road toward Cala Rajada. A group of men was travelling in two powerful rental cars and came under the officers' scrutiny during a roadside check. According to investigators, one of the vehicles allegedly accelerated toward police officers. An officer fired shots at the vehicle — three hits were later found on the car, but the suspects managed to flee at that time.
Investigations and tracing of the trail
Investigators say they traced the lead to the now arrested. In a search of a rental car presumably used by the suspects, balaclavas, gloves and binoculars were found — items investigators link to break-ins. The vehicle is also suspected of having been reported stolen at Palma airport.
Already in July, four people had been temporarily taken into custody in connection with this, but investigations stalled. After months of work, the 19-year-old has now been identified as one of the main suspects.
Arrest and legal position
At the arrest, the young man reportedly resisted violently, according to authorities. He was brought to court; judges ordered custody pending investigation. In the records, he is listed as a repeat offender with multiple theft charges.
The Guardia Civil investigations continue. Further searches and possible arrests were not ruled out by police. For residents in Capdepera and Cala Rajada, who had already been startled that morning, the news remains ambivalent: on the one hand relief at the intervention, on the other hand concern that more accomplices may still be at large.
What residents should know
The local police urge heightened vigilance: report unusual vehicles or groups late at night immediately, preferably with license plates or photos, but without putting yourself in danger. The Guardia Civil emphasizes that tips from the public are often crucial.
Further details are expected in the coming days as investigators specify charges or arrest additional suspects.
