This weekend the island comes alive: an olive fair in Caimari, a honey market in Llubí and an autumn festival in Es Capdellà promise music, crafts and local specialties.
Off to the village markets: olives, honey and more
When the morning air turns a little cooler and coffee cups are emptied later, it's fair season in Mallorca. This weekend several villages have again scheduled their small but charming autumn festivals. If you long for authentic local impressions, head for the squares with tables, the stages in front of the church and the stalls in the narrow lanes.
Caimari: Olives in the spotlight
In Caimari everything revolves around the olive. They say residents already hang branches on shutters and doorframes today — a small green invitation to neighbours and guests. The olive fair starts on Saturday around 10:00 with tastings, demonstrations of oil pressing and stalls offering everything from fresh olive oil to olive pastes. Tip from me: come early — the first presses are usually the most aromatic.
Llubí: Honey, wine and live music
In the much less known Llubí there is a honey market on Sunday. On Saturday evening there's a wine tasting with live music — not a big programme, more cosy: a few tables, a small stage, neighbours chatting. On Sunday from 11:00 beekeepers fill their tasting dishes, and there are homemade jams, nuts and honey pralines. Don't forget to bring cash; card payment isn't always a given at the small stalls.
Es Capdellà: Autumn festival with tradition
The festival in Es Capdellà, in the municipality of Calvià, combines handicrafts, folk dances and the traditional giant figures — a spectacle that appeals equally to children and older visitors. From the afternoon the dances are performed, local associations supply visitors with small treats, and in the evening the plaza becomes sociable.
Practical information: Parking in the villages is limited, so allow plenty of time to arrive. Dress in layers: mornings are often cool and midday can still be warm. And yes — try the products on site. Vendors appreciate honest feedback and are happy to tell the story behind their product.
If you want to discover even more festivals on the island: there's a whole list of dates and places. But honestly, the best thing is to just set off, wander through the lanes and let yourself drift. Sometimes a cup of hot Mallorcan coffee and a piece of almond cake on the village square is worth the weekend.
