A female tourist in a Can Pastilla hostel was allegedly sexually harassed according to police. A 33-year-old man was arrested and later released. Investigations are ongoing.
Unrest in Can Pastilla: Hostel stay ends with police involvement
It was a quiet morning in the seaside town of Can Pastilla when the stillness was broken around 4 a.m. by a police siren. Guests of a small hostel had called the authorities after a fellow guest reported being harassed in the women's restroom. Such reports are rare here – and the incident in the neighborhood is sparking conversation.
What investigators report
According to officials, the suspect was a 33-year-old man registered at the accommodation. He reportedly entered the women's toilet. The complainant said he grabbed her and touched her, even though she resisted. On the scene, the suspect was arrested in the early hours; he later said he only wanted to bring a towel.
The police followed the usual procedure in possible sexual assaults: The victim was taken to Son Espases Hospital for a clinical examination, where doctors prepared a report. Investigators also took witness statements at the hostel and secured traces. The steps taken immediately show that authorities take the protocol in such cases seriously.
Court decision and open questions
Despite the arrest, a judge ordered the release of the man after a brief hearing. That does not mean the case is finished—further investigations are ongoing. According to police sources, parts of the account given by the alleged victim were inconsistent; she behaved antagonistically toward officers during questioning and did not sign the statement. This creates additional complications for investigators.
Such situations are difficult: For the victim the incident remains traumatic, and for investigators it is a matter of establishing solid facts. In a hostel where many people live in close quarters and short stays are common, witnesses can change quickly and evidence is often hard to secure.
Neighbors react, guests are unsettled
Around the hostel, neighbors and cafés spoke with mixed feelings. "You hear more often now: 'Is this still safe?'" says a nearby bar owner who asked not to be named. Some guests have been checking the safety situation more carefully before booking; others see the incident as an isolated case.
The investigations will continue. The prosecutor's office and police now want to bring together the statements, the medical report, and any other evidence before final steps are decided. Until then, Can Pastilla remains with a sense of unease—and the reminder that even on vacation not everything is guaranteed.
