On Monday morning, at the Es Molinar exit, a chain of rear-end collisions involving five vehicles occurred. Fortunately, no one was injured, but traffic remained gridlocked for hours.
Several vehicles collide — Es Molinar affected
On Monday around 9:45 a.m., a chain of accidents formed on the highway to the airport, shortly after the Es Molinar exit. According to witnesses, a total of five vehicles crashed into a rear-end collision that unfolded like dominoes. The crash occurred near kilometer 4, just before the ramp to the Vía Cintura.
Best part of all: Apparently no one was injured in the collision. Several involved parties climbed out of their cars visibly shaken but unharmed. Paramedics checked all drivers on site.
Police closed lanes; recovery continued
A Guardia Civil patrol arrived quickly. Officers closed the left and middle lanes to clear wreckage and debris. Trucks with cranes and tow trucks arrived, while road maintenance workers cleaned the roadway. Nevertheless, traffic queued for several kilometers; commuters reported desperate honking and improvised detours along the seafront road.
The recovery work dragged on – by noon the left lane was still blocked, and police urged drivers to detour widely or allow more time. A bus driver passing the scene muttered: "You don't want to experience mornings like this twice."
A look at the statistics – concerns in the Balearics
This crash adds to a worrying trend in the Balearic Islands: this year, around 34 road fatalities have been registered so far — more than in the same period in 2024. Motorcyclists account for a large share of the victims, roughly 40 percent. For comparison: in 2024 there were 49 road deaths across the Balearics, of which 33 were on Mallorca.
Known dangerous stretches such as the Ma-19 between Llucmajor and Palma deserve particular attention; in 2023 there were clearly many accidents there. Experts urge more distance, defensive driving and awareness, especially on seemingly straight sections.
What drivers should know now
If you regularly use the airport route: plan for more time today, check current traffic reports, and follow the police guidance on site. A momentary lapse can quickly lead to multiple vehicles becoming involved — as this morning.
We will stay on it and report if authorities publish new details.
