Last week I was sitting on the small plaza next to the harbor in Colònia de Sant Jordi, it was around 6 p.m. and a pleasant 23 degrees. Two seasonal workers almost simultaneously told me the same story: they had rented rooms in a house for about €500 per month – only to end up with more problems than living space.

Allegations against a landlord

Former tenants describe that the landlord repeatedly held loud parties, drank heavily and caused significant noise at night. Several women say personal items went missing, including two rings. The deposit of around €500 was also never returned. So far, no reports appear to have been filed, out of fear or because people believe it would be pointless.

Why this hurts particularly on Mallorca

Colònia de Sant Jordi is not a large place. Narrow streets, few apartments, many seasonal workers — that makes people vulnerable. When boarding houses and private rooms are rented to wealthy visitors or short-term guests instead of local workers, the situation worsens. And where demand is so high, some apparently exploit the situation shamelessly.

I spoke with a hotel employee who stayed there in July and August: "He promised us cleanliness and quiet; in the end it was dirty, the nights were loud and we missed two rings." You hear such lines here more often, not just this season.

What remains now

The allegations — theft, unpaid deposit, repeated disturbances — show two things: first, many victims lack confidence in quick help. Second, the case reveals how fragile the local housing market has become. Authorities, neighbors and landlord associations should now take a close look. In the short term, witness statements and formal complaints usually help; in the long term the island needs more affordable housing for the people who work here.
