On a Eurowings flight from Palma to Düsseldorf, a German reality TV couple argued with the crew over carry-on luggage. After landing, police intervened but no warning was issued.

Carry-on at the emergency exit triggers a loud confrontation

What happened on Monday morning (September 22) on a Eurowings jet sounded at first like a small cabin mutiny: On board the flight from Palma de Mallorca to Düsseldorf, a German reality couple argued with the flight attendants because their bags were not allowed to be stored in the overhead compartments.

The two sat at the emergency exit, one of the seats that many of us seek for extra legroom. However, strict rules apply there: Bags must be stowed away, passengers must be able to help in an emergency. The crew reminded the couple of this shortly before landing — and the conversation escalated.

Insults at the gate, police clarification after landing

Eyewitnesses report that the discussion quickly grew louder. A flight attendant felt insulted; the affected passenger later admitted to using a demeaning word. After disembarking, airport police officers were waiting at the gate (gate 14) and held a clarifying discussion with both parties.

The atmosphere was tense, but not explosive. The police described the meeting as friendly and informative. No charges were filed, there was no arrest and no legal steps taken. In short: after about half an hour everyone went their separate ways – the plane to the arrivals hall, the passengers to the baggage carousel.

Why the rules at the emergency exit are important

For us islanders this may seem banal, but for safety rules it is important: If you sit at the emergency exit, you must be able to actively help in an emergency. No heavy bags in front of your feet, no child on your lap, no refusal of instructions – otherwise it becomes dangerous quickly.

I spoke with a few airport staff that day: most find it tedious when rules are ignored, but also tedious when a dispute erupts in front of the whole plane. A bit of politeness and a calm word would probably have prevented the scene.

Conclusion: Trouble on board, police mediated, no follow-up: The couple remains known for loud appearances – and hopefully in the future without verbal clashes over hand luggage.
