At Palma airport, handcuffs clicked: A German man allegedly obtained nearly €700,000 in COVID-19 subsidies during the pandemic.

Arrest at the airport: Suspected fraudster stopped on his way to Munich

On the morning of October 21, at Palma airport, a man was arrested who was wanted in Germany under an European Arrest Warrant. Local police intervened as the suspect was about to check out and head toward the departures hall. In short: the plan to fly to Munich did not work out.

What is he accused of?

\n

According to investigators, the 40- to 50-year-old German national is said to have applied for and received government aid during and after the COVID-19 years through false statements. The amount appearing in the files is nearly 700,000 euros. Applications, account movements and business documents are now being scrutinized.

A local establishment on Playa de Palma made him known

\n

On the island, the man apparently ran a well-frequented restaurant on Avenida de Playa de Palma. Residents and guests had described the restaurant in recent years as a fixed meeting point – from paella in the evening to loud nights in the summer. As of now, the regulars knew nothing of an international arrest warrant.

The moment of arrest

\n

Witnesses report a calm, almost routine scene: officers of the Policía Nacional spoke to him near the exit area, conducted a check, and then put him in handcuffs. There is reportedly no public confrontation – rather a quick, professional intervention at the passport control point.

The extradition formalities to Germany are expected to proceed promptly. Until then, the man remains in custody, police circles say.

What the neighbors say

\n

In the neighborhood, people are surprised: \"He was always polite, but lonely,\" says a waitress who knew him for years. Others wonder how such a case could go undetected for so long. The autumn days in the neighborhood are quiet, a light breeze comes from the sea – and the discussions turn again to control, responsibility and the consequences of the pandemic years.

\n\n

What is important now: Authorities are examining evidence and the case will be pursued in court. For guests and locals, the memory of a man who was part of local life remains – until the investigations catch up with him.

We will stay tuned and report as soon as further details about extradition and proceedings become known.
