On the departure level of Palma Airport, two new food and beverage outlets have opened in recent days: chain stands under the names Costa Coffee and Deliquo now offer outdoor seating right where buses and taxis stop. For people with half an hour to spare before dropping off luggage or going through the security checkpoint, this is a welcome option.

If you pass by there in the morning, you can hear suitcases rolling, the clatter of trays and the occasional honk of buses. From the new cafés comes the scent of freshly brewed coffee; there are also sandwiches, small hot dishes, juices and cold drinks. The terraces are furnished and allow smoking — a decision that suits some travelers and is noticeable to others when the air briefly carries the smell of tobacco.

The facilities are located directly on the outside of the departure level, so you can sit in a chair and take a deep breath without going back into the building. This is convenient for families with children, travelers with pets, commuters with a short time window, or simply people who want to dampen the stress before a flight a little.

There is already a small outdoor smoking area in Terminal C, but those who wanted to sit outside without smoke had hardly any opportunities after passing through security. Positively, another outdoor area is being prepared behind the duty-free section in the central concourse. The construction site is already labeled "Terrace," but an exact opening date has not yet been announced.

For the island, the expansion of outdoor dining at the airport has several benefits. In the short term, it improves the quality of stay for travelers and helps distribute crowds more evenly across the site, as with Palma: Elevated connections at the airport aim to ease crowding. In the medium term, it can strengthen the impression of Palma as a travel destination: less hectic, more space to land and let go. Such offerings also create additional jobs in a location that is heavily frequented seasonally.

A few small practical notes: shade and wind protection are important here — the Mediterranean sun can already be strong by mid-morning; litter bins and a clear separation of smoking and non-smoking zones would increase comfort; new signage at Palma Airport would help ensure that no one wastes time while lingering. Such simple details would make the new outdoor area even more user-friendly.

Anyone arriving now and looking for a moment of calm may find it in one of the new spots. And those passing through the terminal in a few weeks can look out for the announced terrace behind the duty-free area — a small but welcome step to make waiting at the airport more pleasant.

In the end, the small pleasing realization remains: a coffee, a seat and a little fresh air are often enough to start a journey with less mental traffic jam.
