Orange Alert in Mallorca: Rain, Thunder and Lightning to Shape the Weekend

An Atlantic low brings heavy showers and thunderstorms: Aemet has issued orange alert for the northeast and east of the island. In Palma, there were flight delays in the morning.

Orange Alert: Rain and Thunderstorms Keep Mallorca Busy

On Saturday morning, a strong Atlantic low moved over the island and returned many Mallorcans their umbrella — or bent it.

Aemet therefore raised the warning level to Orange for the north, northeast and east of the island. Affected places included Llucmajor, Sineu, Inca, Pollença and Manacor. In many places, the distant rumble of thunder could be heard until midday.

Airport and Daily Life

At Son Sant Joan airport, several flights arrived late — a colleague spoke of waiting passengers, wet trolleys, and tired children. In the city, people stood under the canopies of cafĂ©s on Passeig Mallorca and debated whether to head to the office or stay at home.

Aemet had indicated a high probability of rain for almost all municipalities; for the rest of the island, yellow alert applied initially. The orange warning was set until 8:00 PM, after which it should turn yellow.

What Happens Next

For the evening, the weather service expects that thunderstorms will remain active longer mainly in Manacor — there may still be lightning and thunder there. Elsewhere, showers are expected to gradually ease in the afternoon and evening.

Sunday brings a bit of calm: less rain, some sunshine in the morning, especially in the west of the island. SĂłller might see another local thunderstorm around noon, then the cloudiness should decrease by the evening. Aemet plans to lift the warnings starting at 6:00 PM on Sunday.

Temperatures range around 20–21 °C during the day, around 18 °C in the morning. So: pack a sweater, don't forget your umbrella — and if you want to stroll the harbor, better check the Aemet website first.

A quick tip from me: when in doubt, drive slowly, avoid puddles, and enjoy coffee standing up — it's almost typical Mallorca in autumn.
