With about 552,000 euros, an elevator is planned to connect Calle Joan Miró with the Seafront Promenade – a long-awaited step for accessibility and the neighborhood.
An Elevator for the Neighborhood: Small Idea, Big Impact
\nWhen you walk along Calle Joan Miró in the morning, you immediately feel the height difference between El Terreno and the sea. Last week I sat at 9:15 in the small café on the corner – an older woman pushed her walker past and sighed: \"Finally this would be a real relief.\" That's exactly what is coming: an elevator that connects the street with the Seafront Promenade.
\n\nWhat is planned
\nThe project has a budget of about 552,000 euros. Planned is a simple, robust construction that blends unobtrusively into the rock landscape. The responsible architect, Joan J. Fortuny, speaks of an ensemble of several accesses: In total, four new connections should better link the neighborhood to the sea – including squares, stairs and meeting spaces.
\n\nWhy this is more than just an elevator
\nFor residents it's not just about comfort. Strollers, wheelchairs, older people and cyclists should finally have a direct, barrier-free route. And yes: for many it's also a small symbol of urban renewal. You often hear: \"If the stairs disappear, the path to the harbor becomes part of our everyday life again.\"
\n\nDesign and Neighborhood
\nThe construction will deliberately stay simple – not a glass tower, but rather a robust solution that preserves privacy and doesn't loudly trumpet. Some neighbors I met in the shop next to the church hope for less stray through-traffic in the upper part of Calle; others see a chance for new meeting points near the promenade.
\n\nBackground
\nAfter a previous tender failed, the process has started again. The administration emphasizes that the measure is both practical and symbolic. A concrete start date has not yet been officially announced – residents expect, however, that in the coming months the first preparatory work could begin.
\n\nIn short: Not a mega-project, but for many here a real gain. Anyone who often commutes between El Terreno and the Maritim will appreciate it – especially on hot afternoons or on days when the wind comes from the sea and you don't feel like climbing stairs.
