Heavy prolonged rain has put Ibiza on edge on Tuesday morning: streets and tunnels are flooded, schools remain closed – and the alert level has been raised to Red.

Red Alert Level: Ibiza Battles Flooding

What began as a dense drizzle early Tuesday morning quickly developed into a serious weather event. Since around 6:30 a.m., measuring stations have recorded extreme rainfall; authorities have raised the alert level from Orange to Red. Forecasts speak of locally up to 180 liters per square meter within a few hours – that's not a normal rain shower, that's a downpour.

Affected places and infrastructure

Particularly hard hit are the municipalities Eivissa, Sant Josep, Sant Antoni and Santa EulĂ ria. Several connecting roads have been closed due to floodwaters, tunnels are filling up, and in some places water has already crept into houses. Ibiza airport reports problems: terminals with leaks, delayed or canceled flights. Anyone traveling today should definitely first check with the airline.

Schools, buses, safety

The island administration has suspended classes for today – schools remain closed, colleagues report flooded schoolyards. Public transport is also not operating normally: some bus lines are not running at all or only partially. Authorities urge everyone not to go outside unnecessarily and to avoid trips.

A spokesperson for the national weather service explained that the low-pressure system is stationary, therefore localized torrential rainfall can occur. In plain language: huge amounts of water can fall in a short time in places, quickly overwhelming drainage systems.

Practical tips for residents and visitors

If you are on Ibiza or Formentera: stay in upper floors, avoid low-lying streets and basements. Do not park cars in underpasses. Pay attention to local warnings by SMS or radio. Note important numbers (in emergencies: 112) and follow the instructions of the rescue services.

The situation can change rapidly. Keep in touch with relatives and check the current flight status before planned trips to the airport. We will stay on it and report as soon as there is new information. And yes — the weather this week really isn't nice to us.
