New Severe Weather Front Approaching: Rain, Thunderstorms and Noticeable Cooling on Mallorca

AEMET and local services again warn of heavy rain and thunderstorms for Tuesday. The island remains unsettled this week — don't forget your umbrella.

Weather change continues: umbrellas instead of sun hats

It feels as if autumn suddenly decided to move in. After the thunderstorms over the past weekend, the next front is already rolling in toward Mallorca. On Tuesday morning, the national weather service AEMET issued warnings again for large parts of the island: heavy rain, thunderstorms and isolated hail are on the agenda.

Where caution is advised

The Tramuntana mountains as well as the north, northeast, east and southeast of the island are particularly affected. The yellow warning level is effectively in place from 08:00 until midnight. Meteorologists expect up to 30 liters per square meter in an hour in some places; over longer periods (four to eight hours) totals can locally reach up to 60 liters. If that happens, roads can quickly become shiny (or better: mirror-like) — and we're already familiar with some lower cellar steps flooding.

What this means for everyday life

Daytime temperatures are expected to be noticeably lower than a few days ago. In Maria de la Salut, Tuesday will see highs of around 23 °C, in Alcúdia and Sa Pobla about 24 °C, and in Palma a maximum of around 25 C. For Wednesday and Thursday, daytime highs remain similar: mostly between 23 and 25 °C, with a mix of sun and clouds — and dry for the time being.

But if you think “well, it’s just a short shower”: precipitation is forecast again from Friday. Whether official warnings will follow then is not yet clear. The maps show a certain persistence of the low-pressure systems — they are not moving away quickly.

Practical everyday tips

If you are out in the coming hours: pack an umbrella (or a waterproof jacket), slow down on wet curves, and postpone mountain outings to times with better visibility. Hotels and restaurants on the coast are experienced — but bike trips or excursions with a rental car should be planned carefully.

AEMET has also posted individual notices via text message/Twitter — those who check updates daily are better prepared. I spoke to a few acquaintances in Palma this morning: some are happy about the cooling, others are annoyed because long beach days end abruptly.

Outlook

The weekend could become temporarily milder: on Saturday local temperatures of up to 28 °C are possible. Until then, expect changeable conditions and stay alert. And yes — the umbrella you stashed in the trunk will probably be used more often than you think.
