Night-Time Storm System Causes Damage in Andratx and Calvià

👁 2174

During the night, a powerful storm system swept over southwestern Mallorca, bringing down trees, damaged cars, washed-out beaches and numerous incidents that kept the communities on their toes.

Strong gusts and heavy rain cause damage along the southwest coast

Around 3 a.m., residents in Andratx and Calvià couldn't sleep: a compact storm system swept over southwestern Mallorca, leaving wind damage, flooded street ditches, and ruined terraces. Cleanup efforts lasted into the morning—the cleaning crews and firefighters were tireless in action.

Camp de Mar and Port d'Andratx: Boats capsized, terraces ruined

The chaos around Camp de Mar was especially noticeable. At the small sailing club, the wind toppled several boats; sails were creased, covers torn. In Port d'Andratx harbour, chairs and tables were scattered, large flowerpots had been toppled by gusts like dominoes. A restaurant owner told me he found sand between the tiles in the morning and tasted the salty rain in the air.

The municipality temporarily cordoned off areas along the promenade until shards of glass were removed and terrace furniture secured. Cleaners reported branches, PET bottles and soaking-wet newspapers that had collected in street inlets.

Calvià: Roads blocked, power outage in Es Capdellà

Calvià was not spared either: trees lay across streets; the MA-15 was temporarily difficult to pass. Affected areas included Calvià village, Son Ferrer, Galatzó and Es Capdellà. In Es Capdellà there was a brief power outage, caused by damage to the power network according to technicians.

In Son Ferrer and Bellavista residents reported dents in cars from fallen branches. On a corner of Carrer Major, a railing was partially torn down—the fire department secured the building until technicians could begin work.

Incidents, cleanup efforts and an appeal from authorities

The control center logged around 50 incidents by 10 a.m. Police, municipal services and volunteers cleared streets, cut up fallen trees and removed debris from promenades. Administrations praised the rapid response of the emergency services and urged the public to only call emergency numbers in true emergencies and to stay home if possible.

Weather warning: The national weather service (AEMET) continues to expect unsettled conditions; isolated strong gusts are still possible. If you haven't secured shutters or left terrace furniture outside, you should check now.

Such a storm leaves its mark: broken flower pots, a few dents in parked cars, and the reminder of how quickly the weather can change here. Fortunately there were no reports of serious injuries—that is the most important thing on a morning like this.
