In Palma, police stopped a driver who appeared to be driving without a valid license for the fifth time — with two fake licenses in his pocket.
Fifth violation: Caught again without a driver's license
In the afternoon of 19 September, a patrol in Calle Aragón stopped a car for speeding. The driver, according to police, a 33-year-old Colombian, immediately admitted that he did not have a valid driver's license. What the officers shortly thereafter held in their hands, however, made the matter even more peculiar: two different driver's licenses, presumably fake.
What was notable about the documents
The papers did not look genuine to the officers. On one of the documents there was a year of issue that did not match the stated start of validity. The other contained English misspellings and illogical combinations of driving license classes. One officer, half joking, later described the documents as an attempt to outsmart time — because the date did not match.
The man explained that he had bought both licenses for €1,080. The investigators filed charges for document forgery and violations of road safety. He was not arrested on the spot; the documents were handed to the judiciary for review.
Why this is dangerous
Anyone driving without a valid license exposes themselves not only to fines or points. In a worst-case scenario, the question arises whether insurance coverage applies, who is liable in an accident, and above all: whether other road users are put at risk. That this is already the fifth known incident unsettles some residents. In the Aragón neighborhood, people reported that police had been called more often for reckless drivers.
The investigators are now checking where the forgeries come from. Such documents sometimes circulate via intermediaries, say officers. In Mallorca, from local experience, checks repeatedly show: not all papers are genuine and not everyone behind the wheel is legally on the road.
A reminder to everyone: Drive only with a valid driver's license — and if there is any doubt about papers, better leave it to the professionals.
