Autumn on Mallorca: Art, Sound and Cinema — a packed cultural autumn

Dates, small stories and why this is good for the island

The summer may still have heated the promenade, but in Palma's streets you can already tell the city is gearing up for gallery light, the murmur in theatres and sound in churches. Cafés on Passeig Mallorca are full of voices in the afternoons, discussing exhibitions, concerts and film screenings. For anyone who likes to experience culture live: the coming weeks offer something for almost everyone.

On 19 September Nit de l’Art returns — Palma's big night for contemporary art — celebrating its thirtieth anniversary this year. In the days before, galleries, museums and unusual venues open their doors; hotels and courtyards are transformed into exhibition spaces. It is one of those evenings to be experienced on foot: short walks, many conversations, streetlights illuminating small groups.

Classical music fans will find plenty. Already on 18 September a string trio will play at the Agroturismo Sa Torre de Santa Eugenia with pieces from Handel to Piazzolla; afterwards a benefit dinner offers space for exchange. The Macià Batle winery is also collaborating with Sunday midday concert series: piano trios, solo concerts and a string quartet open intimate Sundays of wine and music (tickets €25; reservations via 971-140014 or 695-266179).

In Pollença the Claustre de Sant Domingo will host a focused programme: young musicians dedicating themselves to Mahler. On 12 September the Sixth Symphony is on the programme; in the following days works by Brahms and compositions that connect Gustav and Alma Mahler will be performed. At the end of September the Orquestra de Cambra de Mallorca will play Mahler's First as well as the adagio of the unfinished Tenth. The season of the Balearic Symphony Orchestra begins on 8 October with cellist Kian Soltani as guest and runs until May 2027. Names like Emmanuel Pahud as a finale, Ian Bousfield or Ellinor D’Melon are already on the schedule — a sign that the island is steadily gaining profile as a concert location.

For chamber music lovers: the Port de Sóller festival starts on 10 October with three weekends featuring ensembles from renowned houses. And I Musici will bring Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons' to Palma on 19 November — an evening for baroque enthusiasts (tickets available, among others, via the Auditorium).

Jazz also offers many highlights. On 25 September the Bourbon Street Stompers together with singer Julie Silvera will bring traditional New Orleans sound to Palma's Auditorium (ticket price around €38). The Jazz Voyeur Festival begins at the end of October with Brazilian Latin-jazz and this year has announced Al Di Meola as headliner, who will perform in Inca on 22 November. In between, stars such as Cécile McLorin Salvant and Hans Theessink will be heard; tickets for individual concerts are offered via the festival website.

For fans of modern sounds and pop there are tribute nights and cover acts: from Queen to Dire Straits homages, from 80s synth-pop to band revivals — and ensembles celebrating long-standing collaborations, like Brothers in Band on 21 November at the Auditorium.

Flamenco and dance are a mainstay of the programme: Pablo Montalvo brings his programme 'Soul of Flamenco' on 15 November, and three days later the company of Jesús Cortés will dance 'Compás Flamenco' — live, intense and physical. At the beginning of October the Tao Dance Theater from China opens the dance cycle at the Auditorium with a contemporary evening that has already attracted international attention.

And the cinema? The Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival starts on 28 October and runs until 4 November, and the island's autumn calendar is detailed in October in Mallorca: Four Festivals That Make Autumn Tasteable. The festival organisers have reviewed hundreds of submissions for the 15th edition; the full programme will be released in stages. Festivals like this attract filmmakers, producers and audiences — and ensure that Palma is noticed as a meeting place for audiovisual art even outside the summer months.

What remains as an impression? Autumn on Mallorca is not a winding down but another season of life: less tourist hustle at the beach, more density in event spaces, conversations after concerts on plaza benches. For the local cultural sector this means planning security, and for residents and visitors the chance to experience island culture in person. My tip: pair an evening at Nit de l’Art with a concert and then have a drink at one of the lit plazas. Or secure tickets early for the opera or film screenings — many productions have limited seating. Autumn is the time when Mallorca breathes culturally and participates. And you can hear it, see it and taste it — in the small bars, after concerts or while walking through a gallery lane.
