Popular viewpoint becomes crime scene: three arrests after car break-ins

At the northern tip of the island, where busloads of photographers arrive in the morning and couples come for the sunset in the evening, there have again been cases of vehicle break-ins. The Mirador d'es Colomer near Pollença is beautiful — but apparently also targeted by perpetrators who systematically check parking spots frequented by tourists.

The incidents took place, according to police, on Tuesday, 21 October, around midday. At about 12:30 p.m. several holidaymakers reported one after another that their cars had been broken into. Often these are short stops: window cracked open a little, backpacks on the back seat, two minutes to take photos — and something is gone. That day several vehicles were parked in the small lot beneath the pine-lined cliffs.

The Guardia Civil reacted quickly. Patrols set up a checkpoint nearby, interviewed the victims and collected descriptions. Shortly afterwards officers noticed a car whose occupants matched the descriptions. During the subsequent check, approximately €2,470 in cash and jewellery were found in the vehicle.

The three people arrested — two 28-year-old men and a 48-year-old woman, all Spanish nationals — were taken into custody on suspicion of burglary and handed over to the judiciary. Further details about the proceedings were not initially released by the Guardia Civil.

Not an isolated case: summer finds in the bushes

The scene is reminiscent of similar discoveries in the past: last summer, discarded wallets and identity documents were repeatedly found in the surrounding scrub at the same spot — apparently dumped loot. Passports from various countries lay among thorny bushes and rocks, suggesting the perpetrators were specifically after cash in wallets.

Visitors should follow a few rules: do not leave valuables visible in the car, always keep bags with you or stow them in the trunk (out of sight), and for longer stops it is better to stay in groups. The parking area at the mirador is tight and the exit is winding — a brief lapse in attention is enough.

Visitor numbers at Mirador d'es Colomer remain high. Good weather, spectacular views and a relaxed sense of security make many people let their guard down. The recent arrests show, however, that police response works — and that a little caution won’t ruin a beautiful outing.
