A viral video shows an 18-year-old speeding down the stairs at Castell de Bellver on a bicycle. Police have identified and charged him.

Rapid descent at Castell de Bellver ends in charges

What at first looked like a short clip for social media now has real consequences: an 18-year-old cyclist from Llucmajor races down the wide staircase at Castell de Bellver in a video, endangering pedestrians. After only a few hours online the footage was the talk of Palma — and the police intervened.

How the trail led to the door

Investigators did not need long searches: through the publicly visible profiles of the teenager, officers were able to identify the author of the clip. It reportedly took place in the late afternoon, apparently in dry weather and good visibility — ideal conditions for spectators, but not for reckless maneuvers on the historic steps.

The charges are gross negligence and endangering pedestrians. With this the authorities link two serious violations of traffic regulations. In plain words: something like this can end badly for anyone involved — neither for the person filming nor the one watching — or in the worst case, the person who happens to be walking on the stairs.

Increased patrols, clear warning

In response, the forces have stepped up controls around the castle. Police and law enforcement stress that historic sites like Castell de Bellver must not be used as a backdrop for dangerous stunts. They have also publicly warned of possible imitators — not without reason, because viral clips sometimes motivate others to try the same.

A resident who claimed to have observed the scene later said it was "a few seconds of pure adrenaline" — and dryly added: "Luckily no one was seriously injured today." Such statements show how narrowly accidents can sometimes be avoided.

From the scene to real life

The incident raises a larger issue: what matters more — a few clicks online or the safety of people on site? For the police the answer is clear. And for the many tourists who visit the castle daily, the case is also a small reminder: not every stunt is just entertainment.

Whether there will be a court hearing or further measures against the young man now depends on the further review of the file. One thing is clear: the authorities take such actions seriously — and will likely keep a closer eye on popular spots in the future.

If you are at Castell de Bellver soon: keep your eyes open, the stairs belong to pedestrians.
