During a traffic check near Petra, a 53-year-old bus driver was stopped. His blood alcohol level was well above the allowed limit. The vehicle was seized, investigations are ongoing.
Early Stop in Petra: Bus Carrying Wedding Guests Halted
In the early hours of October 18, a patrol from the traffic police on a rural road near Petra stopped a bus that was transporting several guests of a wedding celebration. It was still dawn, the street lamps cast long shadows on the asphalt, and some passengers with wrinkled jackets and shoes stepped off the bus, looking tired from a long night.
Breathalyzer Test Yields Clear Result
The officers noted clear signs of impairment in the 53-year-old driver and conducted a breathalyzer test. The result was unambiguous: the reading was well above the permissible limit for professional drivers — according to investigators, about five times the limit. Consequently, the bus was taken out of service and the man was temporarily detained.
The Guardia Civil in Manacor immediately opened proceedings for endangering road traffic. In addition to the elevated alcohol level, the inspectors found deficiencies in the vehicle's required documents: a driver card was missing, and the mandated rest periods did not seem to have been observed.
What Consequences Could Follow?
With a conviction, the offense could carry significant penalties: imprisonment of several months, longer driver's license suspensions, and fines are possible. Additionally, it is being examined whether further violations of goods and passenger transport law occurred, which could aggravate the situation.
For the wedding guests, the journey home ended abruptly: some had to arrange alternative transport, others waited in the cool morning air for relatives. Such scenes remind us how quickly a celebration can spiral out of control when rules are ignored.
The investigations are ongoing. Police ask potential witnesses or fellow passengers to come forward — especially to reconstruct the procedures and responsibilities precisely. In an area with many small roads and narrow village streets, traffic safety is important for locals and visitors alike.
Note: The information is based on statements from the relevant authorities. Proceedings may still change, and a final verdict has not yet been reached.
