A band of rain will sweep across the island on Sunday: from 6 a.m. the chance of rain rises and temperatures fall noticeably. Good news for gardens — and a reminder for boaters to be cautious.
Rain showers on Sunday — and a touch of autumn in the air
The sun takes a short break this weekend: a rain area will move across Mallorca on Sunday, bringing wet streets, fresher air and the typical smell of damp earth. Aemet already sees the chances increase clearly in the early morning hours. If you were still stomping through the old town in a T‑shirt yesterday, don't underestimate the jacket — a quick switch to autumn mode is possible.
The exact sequence: When it gets unpleasant
Model runs paint a clear picture: from around 6 a.m. the probability of showers climbs to about 85%. In Palma this means: Passeig marítim, Portixol and La Llotja can quickly get wet. On Sunday afternoon the probability even rises locally to 100% — then drops tap against café umbrellas and the clinking of espresso cups mixes with the patter on the asphalt. If you drink your cappuccino outside, be prepared for a short dash to the café garage or have an umbrella at hand.
Temperatures: noticeable but short-lived drop
With the rain comes cooler air: after a few days around 27 °C the highs will briefly fall to about 24 °C. On the night into Monday stations expect around 14–16 °C. On paper this sounds moderate, but on the coast the difference is clearly felt — especially if the northeast wind freshens and moist air sweeps along the promenades. Monday will remain largely dry but will feel autumnal; hardly more than 22 °C is likely.
Good news for optimists: a return to milder days is likely from midweek. However, Aemet indicates that another rain field is possible on Wednesday — so the situation remains a bit shaky, like a rubber boat in slight swell.
Local peak values and everyday tips
On Friday the warmest spots on the island were in the east and centre: Artà reached just under 26 °C, closely followed by Llucmajor, Campos and the lighthouse near Cala Rajada. Such local differences can flip quickly depending on whether the wind blows from sea or land. On the promenades you then not only hear the wind but also the seagulls swooping in on freshly offered crumbs.
Practical tips for the weekend: throw a light jacket over your shoulders when strolling through Palma; for the café visit choose a table under an umbrella; pack a thin windshirt for a visit to the cala. Boaters should secure short lines and loose items — and only go out if experienced when the northeast picks up. For walkers: sturdy shoes, because wet rocks and promenades can become slippery.
What the rain brings — and why it's a small joy
Wet is not only unpleasant but often useful: gardens and plants get a free shower, the dust layer of recent weeks is washed away and the air simply tastes fresher afterward. For farmers, hobby gardeners and everyone who works with soil and plants, it's a small, welcome breath of early autumn. Kids, in turn, love to run barefoot through the puddles — provided mum has kept her jacket.
I'll check the harbour measurements and mobile stations again tomorrow morning. If anything changes, we'll report back here — without panic, but with practical advice: Umbrella? Yes. Sailing boat? Only if you have experience with the northeast wind. And yes — the jacket you tossed aside today will soon come in handy again.
