The Balearic government announces that vocational students from the 2026/27 school year can travel to school free of charge on selected routes. A measure to prevent dropouts and promote equal opportunities.
Cost-free school commute: a move that stands out
From the 2026/2027 school year, vocational students in the Balearic Islands will be able to commute to school free of charge on certain school bus routes. It may sound like a small timetable change â but for some families on the island it's a real relief. I spoke with parents who are already considering whether the piggy bank for bus tickets can finally be closed.
What exactly is planned
The Ministry of Education has stated that the existing morning routes, which already transport upper-secondary students for free, will also be opened to apprentices. No new routes, no proliferation in the timetable, but free seats for students undertaking vocational training. Practically speaking this means: anyone who has to attend vocational school in Palma, Manacor or Inca Monday to Friday will, for the time being, pay nothing â provided they use one of the existing connections.
Why this matters
It's not just about money. Students from rural areas often report that the long journey and the cost make studying difficult. The ministry aims to reduce school dropout rates and improve equal opportunities. I met a mother in Santa Maria: she said her son is motivated, but the bus fare hit the family budget hard in tight months. Such relief can really make a difference.
Practical consequences on the ground
Small but noticeable effects are expected: fewer late arrivals, more relaxed parents in the morning and hopefully more apprentices who stick with their training. Critics point out that the offer only applies to existing routes and therefore not all municipalities will benefit equally. A bus driver in an industrial area called it a âgood first stageâ â but not the final destination.
What remains to be clarified: How many seats are actually available, how will entitlement be checked, and can the model later be extended to evening courses or new lines? The ministerial announcement is a start. For many families on the island it is an everyday relief that they will likely notice for the first time in autumn 2026.
