A lifeguard explains how he has been living in a camper for years, though he works. Seasonal contracts, skyrocketing rents, and a strike show how tight things are on the island.
A job that saves lives — and no secure home
At first glance it doesn’t fit: someone who watches over the sea, whose job is to pull people out of the water, who himself does not have a proper home. Christian, 34, has lived in a motorhome on Mallorca since 2022. He works as a lifeguard, loves the island, and says: "I’m not leaving."
The problem is banal and bitter: seasonal work means only a salary in the summer months. In the cold months the account is empty. His wife rents a small room for around 600 euros per month, thus keeping the two of them afloat, but they cannot live together in it. Christian explains that in the evenings he goes to the gym on the Avenida, only to become so tired that he can sleep in the hot camper. When autumn rains, he fears the motorhome will leak. Sounds undignified? It is.
