Major Weather Change: Yellow Severe Weather Warning Across Mallorca

The forecast for this week is turning: Aemet has issued a nationwide yellow alert for Tuesday, September 9. Heavy rain and local thunderstorms are possible – the start of the school year could be wet.

Yellow warning level for Tuesday – across the entire island

\n

The meteorologists from Aemet have issued a nationwide yellow warning for Tuesday, September 9, 2025. In short: after a calm weekend, a significantly wetter phase is coming to Mallorca. If you are out on Tuesday, at least bring an umbrella – and perhaps an extra portion of patience.

Sunday: still calm — with a view of the mountains

\n

On Sunday the island still largely shows the calmer side. In the morning there are more high and mid-level clouds, in valleys such as Pla de Mallorca there can be fog in the morning. Temperatures in the valley usually reach 29 to 33 degrees, along the coast some places up to 35 degrees. The wind remains weak to moderate from the east; at Playa de Palma only a light breeze blows.

Monday: the first clouds roll in

\n

For Monday evening, Aemet predicts an increase in cloud cover. Locally showers are already possible during the night, occasionally mixed with Saharan dust — you know, that fine orange veil that sometimes sticks to windshields. In some places, such as SĂłller or AlcĂșdia, it can be foggy early. Temperatures fall only slightly.

Tuesday: sometimes heavy rain and thunderstorms

\n

The real change comes on Tuesday. Heavy to very heavy rain is expected; local thunderstorms cannot be ruled out. In a short time, locally up to 30 liters per square meter within one hour can fall. Coastal areas and lower-lying regions could be particularly affected. The sky remains largely overcast; temperatures fall slightly.

Wednesday: start of school and wet surprises

\n

For many families, school begins on Wednesday – and the situation remains unsettled. In the morning, in many parts of the island, there can still be residual showers and isolated thunderstorms. If your children ride bicycles: better rain gear and leave a bit earlier, the roads can be slippery.

My everyday tip: Small shops and cafes in Palma often still have dry corners, but on Passeig des Born it is a bit emptier on Tuesday than usual. If you want to stroll along the coast, wear sturdy shoes — the promenades can be full of puddles.

We will keep you updated if Aemet raises the warning level or specifies areas. Until then: eye on the weather, pack an umbrella, and check the forecast before heading out.
