After a night of thunderstorms, the island remains on alert: heavy rain has flooded streets and flights are delayed â Aemet keeps Orange warning level in effect.
Restless Night, Wet Morning
In the night from Monday to Tuesday, a powerful thunderstorm system swept over Mallorca. In many areas, the rain chaos began around 2 a.m., according to neighbors in Son Ferriol and Inca. Anyone who looked out the window early this morning saw wet streets, wind-blown leaves, and the typical puddles that suddenly make cars float. It smelled of wet asphalt and cold wind â not a pleasant wake-up call.
Where it was worst
Particularly affected are Palma, the Inca area, Son Ferriol and the coastal stretches near Cala Millor. In CalviĂ , according to local reports, a balcony railing was partially destroyed by strong gusts. Fortunately there have been no reports of injuries so far. The strongest recorded gust reached about 91 km/h â you can feel it.
Traffic and airport: delays in the morning
The airport reports several delayed departures and arrivals; connections, including those to Germany, are affected. Bus lines have problems on some routes due to flooded sections; a city bus became stuck in an underpass â passengers got off later and waded through water up to ankle depth. For those traveling today: check status early, don't just head out.
Orange warning remains active
Aemet has issued the orange warning for the entire island, still in effect until Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. Forecasters expect more showers and isolated thunderstorms later in the day. Locals strongly advise avoiding streams and low-lying paths.
Schools, parks and markets
In Palma, all municipal parks and playgrounds are closed as a precaution. The city administration has also cancelled several market days. I spoke this morning with a market vendor: her stalls would not have stood anyway, the water was already in the driving lanes.
Practical tips
If youâre on the island: avoid walks in valleys or along riverbeds, do not park under trees or on road edges that can quickly become undermined. And yes, take wet road signs seriously â itâs slippery.
The week starts wet. If you can, stay indoors today, water plants later, and check flight status again before departure. Iâm about to walk around the house again and move the wet chairs â the neighbor is already joking about his broken balcony furniture. Such days belong to the island too, unpleasant but manageable if youâre careful.
