Balearic Islands president Marga Prohens has announced that the Palma metro line will be extended to Son Espases Hospital. Technical preparatory work is set to begin soon.

Metro to Son Espases: Finally a Concrete Step

It sounds almost too good to be true, but yesterday it became clearer: the Palma metro should be extended to Son Espases Hospital. Balearic Islands President Marga Prohens said that technical preparatory work is set to begin in the coming months. For many who commute daily between the city and the hospital, this is a ray of light.

What exactly is planned

The new line would connect to the line that this summer already opened to Parc Bit. In practice this means fewer transfers, more punctual connections and a more relaxed journey for shift workers and patients with morning appointments. Those who ride along Passeig de Mallorca in the morning or are stuck in traffic on Avinguda Joan MirĂł know how urgently such an alternative is needed.

Technical preparatory work means pipes, surveys, perhaps closures — for a short time residents and commuters will notice. Prohens emphasised, however, that in the coming months they want to first lay the groundwork before larger construction phases begin.

Advantages — and a few open questions

The positives are: better accessibility to the central hospital, less traffic and a modern connection for the staff. Critics will of course ask for details: costs, completion date, and how long residents will have to endure construction noise. The idea has been floating around planning offices for years; now it seems closer than ever.

For many of us here on the island it remains exciting to see how implementation looks. Will it be a simple tunnel, will existing lines be re-timed, or will additional stations be built? We expect initial answers in the coming months as the technical teams begin their work and measurement points around Son Espases become visible.

I will continue to monitor developments—and yes, I will take the bus to the clinic again on a Tuesday morning to see how the situation changes. Quick reminder: patience is required now, but it is a step in the right direction for Palma.
