Aemet has announced a severe weather situation for this weekend: heavy rain, strong winds and a noticeable drop in temperatures — especially in the Tramuntana.

Storm alert: heavy rain and strong winds for all of Majorca

If you walked through Palma today, you could already smell it: that cold, damp air rolling in from the harbor. Weather services are warning — and they mean it. For Saturday the whole island is on heightened alert; experts in the Serra de Tramuntana expect up to 100 liters per square meter in just twelve hours.

The Spanish weather service Aemet has issued warnings for Saturday from 00:00 to 23:59. Imagine: in one night so much rain that gates, small parking lots and the switchback roads in the Tramuntana could be underwater in a short time. Elsewhere on the island, locally up to 80 liters in twelve hours and spots with 20 liters in one hour are possible.

Wind, waves and a noticeable drop in temperature

The wind will shift during the day: weak to moderate from the southwest in the morning, then increasing with strong gusts from the north. On the north and northeast coasts waves up to three meters are expected; coastal warnings are active. Aemet also warns of a temperature drop — Saturday's highs will only be between 16 and 20 °C, noticeably cool for late October/early November.

Notes from the neighborhood: Around 9 a.m. Javier on Calle Sant Miquel brought his flower boxes inside, shopkeepers at Plaça del Mercat put sandbags in front of their doors. My neighbor Jordi carried the balcony furniture into the stairwell — the sort of things people do when a night of heavy rain is forecast.

Sunday: easing, but the wind remains

On Sunday conditions will improve regionally. Rain and showers should ease in the morning and temperatures will rise slightly. Still, the wind remains an issue: in the east and along the coast strong gusts are expected, which can still make conditions unpleasant.

Practical tips: During the alert phase avoid unnecessary trips, do not drive through flooded roads, secure loose items on terraces and keep an eye on local warnings (e.g. Emergències 112). Flight and ferry connections may be affected — check schedules before departing.

It's one of those weekends when the island shows how quickly the weather can change here. Not dramatically panicked, but stay vigilant. I'm going to quickly empty the rain barrel now — better prepared than wet.
